“OK but not terrific”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2011

Port Sydney is a charming hamlet and in trying to find accommodations for a wedding that we were attending we decided to stay for two nights. The owners Paul and Connie purchased this lodge about 10 months ago and have really done improvements to the restaurant and lounge areas. The rooms are nice but sparse but with an fine bed for a comfortable sleep. However, here is where the owners need to improve to justify paying $140. plus tax for a standard room. No air conditioning, no Kleenex, no art work on the walls, one waste basket in the bathroom, no table lights and nothing to keep the light out on the balcony door. No rates posted on the door and no fire escape diagram were available. A continental breakfast was to be included but upon arriving in the dining room we were greeted with Paul, the owner on his laptop, which he is obviously addicted, and he did not even look up to say good morning. Our continental breakfast on Saturday morning consisted on a muffin and coffee and my wife had to ask for some hot water in order to make a tea. Sadly, for breakfast in this community was non existent with the exception of a small diner just outside the area. For the amount we spent I would advise you to drive the extra 20 minutes to Huntsville where for $40. less you can have better accommodations, with pool and all the other usual amenities It is a same because The Pine Lodge Inn can be great and it would take just a few dollars more to make it a three star accommodations. For now it remains two stars at best.

Dear 02Retired:

Thank you for your review and feedback. As new Inn owners, we are constantly learning and you’ve made some points that will hopefully help us exceed our guest’s expectations moving forward. We’re disappointed that you felt your stay with us fell a little short.

As you noted in your review, the Inn has undergone extensive renovations since we purchased it 14 months ago. Renovations included a substantial investment to update the heating, water and air conditioning systems. Two days prior to your arrival, the area experienced a brown-out and the resultant power surge burnt out our air conditioning system. At check-in, we explained and apologized to our guests for the situation and are working to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.

Although the renovation has been extensive, there are still some finishing touches to complete. Most all of the rooms currently have art work which is a project that will be completed within the next few days. All of our rooms do, however, have table lamps as well as draperies on the balcony doors and privacy blinds on any windows. If we were made aware of your need for an additional waste basket or Kleenex, we would have gladly provided you those items.

Our Standard Room rate is $130 per night and although not advertised as such, we have been including a free continental breakfast with freshly made baked goods and fruit salad. During the summer season, very few guests have wanted more than the free continental breakfast, but as you noted, there is Diner less than 2 minutes away. Our restaurant (Grille ’27) is a full service restaurant open for both lunches and dinners.

Regarding our guest room rates, the resounding feedback is that we provide excellent value. Comparative rates in Huntsville this weekend are $160 per night at two large mid-priced chain hotels and $119 and $110 at two large value-priced hotel chains. Continental breakfast is only included at the two mid-priced chains. None of the above have a full service restaurant. As a small Inn trying to provide a boutique experience, we are confident that our rates are more than competitive and provide excellent value to our guests.

Our sincere apologies if you felt un-acknowledged when I was on my laptop. We are a small family run Inn and early mornings are the only time to catch up on administrative responsibilities given our restaurant is open from 11:30am thru midnight. Other guest’s have remarked that ‘Paul and Connie are such warm and inviting hosts. It felt to us as if we'd made new friends’ which is the experience we hope each of our guests to have. It is something we will be more sensitive of moving forward.

Once again, we appreciate your input as it gives us the opportunity to continually improve and enhance our guest’s experience.

Regards,
Paul Derry

We stayed for two nights recently to attend a nearby wedding. We could tell that the inn was completely renovated and had beautiful finishes and a well furnished lobby. The rooms are tidy but minimalist - no dressers but has comfortable king sized beds and flat screen tv. Bathrooms also very new and clean. Be sure to bring your own phone/alarm clock as there were none in the rooms. Ate twice at the Grille 27 restaurant - large portions and delicious. More upscale menu than we initially thought and reasonably priced. Buffet breakfast was fruit salad...muffins and coffee/tea so if you were anticipating a full breakfast, you might have to venture elsewhere. The owners are pleasant and very accommodating.

Our family of four just loved staying at the Pine Lodge Inn one hot weekend in July. Inn Keeps Paul & Connie have done a tremendous job renovating the restaurant/bar (now with LLBO!), reception, guest lounge and rooms. Chef Steve Hooper's excellence in the kitchen is unsurpassed. His signature dishes do not dissapoint (try the pickerel po'boy-wow!). At night's end our king bed gave us the best slumber ever. We'll be back...and often~

We do not typically take the time to write reviews, however after our stay at the Pine Lodge Inn, the new owners Paul and Connie deserve kudos! From the moment we walked in we knew we had made a great choice! The Inn is beautiful and cozy. The rooms are spacious with a serene feeling and the bed, well let's just say it was hard to get up! Apparently the Inn has recently undergone a huge renovation and from the pictures we saw, what an amazing transformation! The food, well we are still talking about how delicious it was. The location is so ideal to Huntsville, Bracebridge and Port Carling. After a day out, it was a welcoming haven to come back to.

Keep up the great work Paul and Connie and thanks for making our stay so special! We'll be back!

Connie and Paul have just begun and it can only get better. Nestled in the north pines of Ontario, it looks very unassuming as you drive by. The charm and comfort that the Pine Lodge Inn has to offer is worth experiencing. Make sure that you dine in at least for one breakfast or a dinner. Just the right portions for a weekend away so that you don't feel you need to recover from your vacation. And those floaty beds; feels like you're floating in the clouds. I want one of those at home. Looking forward to a visit during the summer!

After visiting Pine Lodge for many years, we were very impressed with the dramatic renovation Paul & Connie completed in Dec 2010. The main level is now a modern post and beam, and the sitting area is open and very comfortable.
We were a group of 14 people sharing the 7 rooms, and found them very spacious. In some cases they made two rooms into one during the renovation, so the size was wonderful. Better than that was the new furniture and bedding which were scrumptious – just like the King Eddy, etc.
The food was good with adequate portions. (Unlike the bingeing we were use to).
So to concluded; this is a very nice country lodge, with a modern yet comfortable feel about it.

We first met Paul and Connie Derry, the new owners, when we were looking for extra accommodation for guests attending our daughter's winter wedding at a nearby resort. As soon as we met Paul and Connie we knew this lodge would be special. It is tastefully decorated - lots of comfortable leather chairs in the sitting area by a fireplace, a bright open concept dining room, and exceptional overnight accommodation. The beds and bathrooms are cutting edge. They serve a lovely buffet breakfast, tastefully presented.
Paul and Connie are such warm and inviting hosts. It felt to us as if we'd made new friends. And everyone of our guests expressed how much they enjoyed their stay at the Pine Lodge. Thank you for your kind hospitality!
