“Mangapapa Magic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014

We have just had our fourth long weekend at Mangagapapa this year and each experience is better than the one before.
The gracious old homestead is set in simply beautiful gardens then further surrounded by orchards, I don't think I have ever heard such loud and joyous birdsong, but it's true there is so much to delight in. This natural beauty is matched by the warmth of the welcome and overwhelming desire by the staff to make this a personally tailored and perfect experience, it was.
Since our last visit there is a new manager who has vision and exciting plans afoot, including a measure of self sustainability in the form of home grown produce and some livestock....early stages, but the poached eggs that we enjoyed for breakfast were from their own hens ( the glossiest most friendly hens I have ever met) gathered that morning and with all the flavour of a true free range egg. This is a perfect spot for the discerning traveller.

Room Tip: Each is different with their own charm and beautiful views of the garden

Dear AlltheHs,
My heartfelt thanks for writing such a warm review. As mindful caretakers, we are truly blessed to have the opportunity of leaving our 'stamp' on this beautiful property. The mature specimen trees and rose gardens onsite provide a glorious backdrop for guests wanting to simply relax and unwind. For those looking for a little more intimacy, there are numerous beautiful spaces begging for picnics and private walks. Soon we'll be planting groves of citrus and nuts, more stone fruit and other exotic and native plant species, providing more secluded spots for both bird song, and love birds!
We trust you'll be visiting again soon
Kind regards
Nick Judd

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Mangapapa Hotel. Our room was very large and welcoming. We booked ahead for an evening meal and the food was amazing. We really enjoyed a bottle of wine we had tasted earlier in the day and it matched our selection. We traveled in the off season and they had a large party of 14 in the next room. We chose to eat in their bar/glassed in area. We were not given a choice of what to order, but were told what the 3 course meal would be. We enjoy this type of dining since we often feel the chef gets a chance to put their best food forward. Nick, the manager, is a lot of fun. Having recently returned from England his humor is very refreshing in this industry and he has great plans for Mangapapa. We had been searching for Whisky made in New Zealand and he even found an old bottle in their collection and we ordered a shot. We enjoyed walking the grounds the next morning and having coffee at the bar. Our rental car was rear-ended when we left the hotel the next morning by a cement truck and Nick drove by and stopped. He told jokes and stories to distract us while we waited for all reports to be filed. Quite entertaining at a time when we needed it! Enjoy your stay, it is a lovely place.

Dear foreveronward,
Indeed it was a shock to see you dealing with the concrete truck misfortune, I felt so sorry for you!
However, I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the balance of your stay at Mangapapa and Hawkes Bay in general. It was fascinating hearing about your family farm back in Prophetstown. I do hope the rest of your journey through NZ was a pleasure. We look forward to welcoming you back to Mangapapa the next time you grace our shores!
Kind regards

A wonderful 3 night stay at Mangapapa Petit Hotel. Historic home of Sir James & Lady Wattie now a beautiful, boutique hotel. Spectacular garden setting and superb, individual suites, beautifully detailed and so spacious, separate lounge area and huge bathroom. Lovely attention from the staff and SENSATIONAL food. New Chef, Carlton is a wonder, we dined two nights in a row and both evening, the 3 course dinners were superb. You just let them know your dietary restrictions, if any, and trust the chef, it's well worth it. Breakfast was perfect as well, either from the menu or they just do what you want, nothing is too much trouble. Our eggs came from the hens on site. Great bar area with open fireplace. Lovely region to explore, wine & produce.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Seefeld Room, but took a peek at another suite, and any one, in the main body of th...

From the very beginning, to the end of our stay at Mangapapa Petit Hotel, we were treated like royalty. The 'Seefield' room was beautiful and we loved all the little extra touches. We decided on the six course degustation menu, with the wine to match. The food was superb (best desert ever), and the wines were amazing. Thank you so very much to Nick and his team. This was such a wonderful experience for us, that we will most definitely be returning again next year!

We stayed for just one night, we arrived late and it was raining. We were met in the carpark and helped into the hotel. The meal was something very special and we literally did not know what was coming next. When we finished the meal we were given the menu. Very unusal but a great experience. Slept like a log and woke to a very nice breakfast.

We stayed at Mangapapa petit hotel as a petit bridal party of only six people. Everything was organised to detail. A warm welcome, beautiful rooms, friendly service, a great 6 ++ course meal meal and very comfortable rooms! The special touches were much appreciated. You really made our stay a memorable one. Thank you very much, we will be back.

Dear Hieke W,
Your wedding here at Mangapapa was a truly beautiful occasion - what an honour it was to personally host your special day. As you are well aware, our 25 acre property boasts dozens of special spots that are ideal places to 'tie the knot', whether it be in the sunshine during winter, shade in summer, or inside if the weather rains on your day. It was indeed fortuitous that the sun shone at the last minute and you were able to say 'yes' in the sunset. Our team are really looking forward to welcoming you back, please don't leave it too long! Thank you once again for the glory you have bestowed upon us!
Kind regards

Mangapapa is a rare find of a top B&B with an absolutely fabulous restaurant attached (or is it the other way round?). Large individually furnished rooms overlooking the expansive gardens make for a real home-away-from home in the Hawkes Bay area. The absolute highlight is the dinner (we almost did not want to eat anywhere else) with a nine course meal which changes everyday. Composed with fresh ingredients from the area, everyday brought new surprises to the table. The well assorted wine list contained many of New Zealand's finest bottles.

Dear PHS50
Our thanks to you for your glowing review. We are also unsure whether the restaurant is attached to the hotel, or the other way around? What's most important is the quality of the food offering - which is why we're embarking on a fabulous new organic kitchen garden that will guarantee you the freshest possible produce all year around. The degustation menu which you have previously enjoyed is now stepping up to the next level; a personalised bespoke menu. This will allow you the very best of both worlds - you choose how many courses, you tell us what your favorite foods are, you have ultimate control over what you eat. I believe this is the very best way to ensure 100% satisfaction. I do hope you have the opportunity to visit Mangapapa Petit Hotel to indulge your taste buds once again.
Kind regards
