“May half- term break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Last May we decided to go to France for a week over the kids(5 & 3) half term break. I was 7 months pregnant at the time. We had such great time, in fact the kids still talk about our lovely stay at pete and sally's. The gite was perfect for our family, modern with every thing we needed. The swimming pool that was cared for and was lovely and clean is fenced so comoletely safe for families with children. The "garden" was BEAUTIFUL with vegetable patch that the girls loved exploring. Sally makes the best marmalade in the world which you will get in your welcome pack upon arrival which is to die for. We also had access to internet at Sally's house wich was helpful.
Shops, vinyards, chocolate making factory (wheree kids can make their own) the sea, and lots more within vicinity which was absolutely great. Highly recommend it. Thanks Pete & Sally

We returned with our MG Car Club for another wonderful week with Sally and Peter. They are so welcoming, nothing is too much trouble and my husband even got a specially-made birthday cake.
Delicious breakfasts set you up for the day plus excellent 4-course dinners with home-grown fruit and vegetables. Plenty of wine made for great enjoyment and lots of fun and laughter. High standard room and bathroom with comfortable living space and kitchen if we needed it. Some more energetic members used the warm pool. Sally recommended places to visit: Saintes for the amazing amphitheatre, Cognac for Hennessy distillery tours and a boat trip, and also Le Chateau de la Roche Courbon (NW of Saintes). Altogether a first-class holiday - we will return!!

We stayed here with a baby and it was a great cheap stay to do a day trip to cognac. Sally is a little quirky and refused us fresh towels for our second night (apparently she will only change them on your third night), but she was nice enough and the place was clean which made it a pleasant stay. Breakfast was great, coffee not so much!

La Maison des Grands Bambous is a simple B & B which delivers so very much in a tranquil little village about 20 mins drive from Cognac. Sally extends a very warm welcome into her home and is an excellent host. Clean room, comfy beds, great bathroom with plenty of hot water. There is a lovely living space which is beautifully furnished.

Sally cooked us dinner on the first night. It was very, very good. Delicious home made food using fruit and veg from the garden and local ingredients including wine and of course some cognac as as digestif. I would recommend a meal with them. She puts a number of restaurants I have dined in to shame.

Break fast is delicious with home made conserves made with fruit from the orchard with crusty bread and croissants, fresh juice and as much coffee as you could wish for. A perfect way to start the day.

We left jackets behind and only realised when we got home to the UK. Sally found them and then very kindly posted them back to us with no problem at all.

It is everything you could ask for from a B & B and then more.

Just back from an amazing 2 weeks at La Maison des Grands Bambous. Fabulous, well equipped gite, great pool, amazing BBQs, great and knowledgable hosts, made to feel very welcome. Recommend visiting Angouleme, Cognac and Le Chateau de la Roche Courbon. Highly recommend this place for a great, relaxing and welcoming family holiday!!

Hello,
I will try and be very brief with my description. First off Sally is wonderful, she knows a lot of the small Cognac distillers, the good food, and lots of the local environment. You also have to realize that like all places other then big cities (Paris, Bordeaux, etc..) you need a car, bike (might be a stretch) or be an extremely extremely good hiker. Cognac the city can be done in 1-2hrs unless you want to do the Hennessey etc tours. I strongly suggest against it since you have to pay for the tour, and well you're in Cognac, the land of the "cave" and the more local small person you find, the more interesting the cognac.

Ok for the short part.
1. Her place is about 15-20min from Cognac driving.
2. She knows a lot of the small "Cave" to go visit and with her card it will open doors you couldn't imagine (this is one of the many charms of the region, you need to know somebody for good cognac)
3. 1.5hrs from La Rochelle, Rochefort so this can be a day trip
4. 1.5hrs from Bordeaux also another day trip if you want it (I strongly suggest this one, it's magnificent)
5. Orlut - If you want to get a sense of France in these small regions go to the "routier" stop that she suggested. it's 10e for all you can eat and drink food but show up at noon. When you come in the lady points to a seat, and you sit with locals, eat and drink and talk about life food etc.. It was incredible and don't dress nice or you'll stand out like a soar thumb ;)
6. I expected a hostel because of the classification it had. This NOT A HOSTEL but for the price. It is a high quality house, with rooms, kitchenette, washing machine etc.. and like all these small towns you will sleep like a baby with no noise to bug you.

Sally you are great and I hope to bring many friends back to visit, keep up the good house and I hope to have my Mom visit soon as well.

In case you hadn't notice part of this visit is to spend a little time with Sally and get to know the are and the surroundings. I didn't get to meet Peter but can only imagine how wonderful he is as well. Oh and say hi to Duke for me :)

p.s. Remember that like most if not all towns smaller then Paris/Marseille there is NO night life past 10pm, no clubs, no stores etc open nothing. You're better off staying with Sally for 1/4th the price of a hotel then staying in the middle of town and getting stuck in your hotel room anyway. At least here you will enjoy some good sleep, good food, good company, and relax so you can do much more during the day.

Arriving at La Maison Des Grands Bambous at Louzignac in the Charente Maritime
area of South West France was like stepping into heaven, especially as we had
been bitterly disappointed with our previous Gite in the area. That's why
these personal reviews are so important.

Sally and Peter Yik make sure your stay at their small Gite complex is a joy from beginning to end. Entering the grounds, the first thing you notice is the beautiful well cared for garden with brightly coloured plants everywhere. This leads on to the main house and first Gite.

The lovely exteriors of the Gites have been painted in the
traditional Charente manner, and you can see Sally's loving touch evident in
the scrupulously clean interiors, where the traditional white walls and wooden
beams have been complimented by the new (but traditional style) furniture. The
bathrooms are immaculate with lovely modern showers and crisp clean ceramics.
The kitchens are fully fitted out with everything you could possibly need
(they now even have my oyster knife!).

The heated pool, with plenty of sun loungers, is a joy to use, and is especially suited to children. In fact my son took his first unaided strokes there. Near the pool is the barbecue area where Peter weaves his magic, but is available for all to use. The Gite we stayed in is one of two that look over the giant Bamboo grove. There is a lovely patio area and lawn outside where one can have breakfast and an evening meal while
looking at the magical Bamboos. Sally is always available without being obtrusive, which is just the right balance one needs to relax with. My wife and children had a
beautiful time there and we look forward to returning. The prices are unbelievably great value for a three star Gite. You have a great holiday there, you won't be disappointed.
