This hotel was recommended to us by friends for a wine-tasting, walking and sight-seeing tour of the Jura.
The hotel is situated in the high Jura in the commune of Les Molunes, which is a small but widespread collection of farms. It is fairly isolated and one ascends by car up good but winding mountain roads with quite spectacular views. In spring and summer it is very green, largely dairy-cattle-country that produces lots of cheeses. For the owners of a GPS unit, the website gives the hotel’s coordinates which got me right to the front door. The family and staff are warm and welcoming and the service at all times is excellent.
The hotel began life as a family farm three generations ago and was extensively rebuilt in the 1970s in typical Jura style, with plenty of local pine wood. If you can’t bear to leave the glass and concrete chain hotels, this is not for you! The rooms are comfortable, decorated in a ‘country’ style with a small en suite bathroom and separate WC. The bathroom is slightly dated but spotlessly clean and perfectly adequate. In our rooms there was a bath/shower with a hand-held shower, that may not be to the liking of some but was much appreciated by the women of our party as they did not get their hair unnecessarily wet. Most of the rooms are at the front of the hotel and overlook the mountains and forested peaks; quite stunning. There is a lift to take you from the car park to reception and all floors.
The restaurant is on the first floor (USA - second) and has a beautiful view over the valley. Moreover, the owner is an accomplished chef and uses all local produce. The dishes were imaginative, delicious and not expensive. Indicative, I think, was the fact that lunch and dinner were patronised by many local people who clearly appreciated the quality and value of the cuisine. There is a very good, extensive, reasonably priced wine list. We were more than happy to dine every night at the hotel. Breakfast was a generous continental style meal with a good variety of breads, cereals, meats and cheeses.
During winter months the hotel caters for skiers on the nearby slopes. There are separate rooms for boots and skis.
Very highly recommended.
