This was our first visit to Barkwells and we had a few hiccups, but none due to the staff or facilities. One was that we over packed and brought many items we didn't need or use. We stayed in the Diva and the cabin was roomy, well cleaned, and unbelievably stocked. Air conditioning & fans, washer & dryer, vacuum cleaner, ironing board & iron, big screen TV w/ satellite, wireless internet, stereo, DVD player, games & books, dishes and utensils, dishwasher, grill, you name it, they probably thought of it. We had even brought our own water, but the water from the tap was fresh and clean. We also brought a lot of food with us but there is a very large grocery store a short drive away. The only downside to the Diva is that it has a very small yard and a lot of steps down to it. That was fine for our 2 younger dogs, but our 12-year-old, blind Labrador had a difficult time and we had to take him for a walk each time he needed to go out. So if this is an issue for your dog, look at the cabin descriptions closely as others have larger yards and are better equipped for a dog with physical disabilities. Again, this was not the fault of Barkwells - when we booked it was the only cabin still available for the dates we needed and we knew going in there might be a problem for our dog. The rest of the grounds are large, well maintained, and completely fenced and most dogs ran loose. I kept mine leashed as they have never really had this kind of freedom before and I wanted them to become accustomed to the surroundings on this first visit. I recommend that if you are going here; please know how to control your pooch before you let him off leash. One dog was a bit exuberant and jumped on me and my dogs on two separate occasions scratching me and scaring my blind Lab who had no idea what was happening. The dog's owner showed no interest in controlling his dog and seemed to think this was funny. I reported the incidents to the owners of Barkwells and they responded immediately and to my satisfaction. All other dogs (and humans) we met were well-mannered and got along fine with our dogs. So if you plan on vacationing in the Asheville/Hendersonville area and want to take along your canine companion, this is definitely the place.
