I think folk have a choice in this city. They can go for the huge franchise bakeries and bistros that are packed full of people and also very competitively priced, with waiters running around and the till ringing in the background. Or you can go for a bakery that has been servicing this city for 26 years, has superbly baked pastries that vary from week to week, excellent lunches, fully licenced, and open until 7pm. The book store next door is open until 9pm I think. What more could you want? Whenever I go to De La Creme, I sit next a huge, beautifully restored sash window, overlooking the street and the passers-by. I over-hear the conversations of tourists and travellers who somehow, always seem to find there way to this gem of a place. To me, De La Creme has a certain old charm that you cannot buy in this city, you have to earn it. I can only hope that when I am 60, in another 26 years, I will still be able to enjoy this wonderful place.
