My wife and I traveled from San Francisco to Whitehorse YT. Everything (once we landed) was taken care of by Northern Tales, including being picked up at the airport, hotel, city tour (on our first morning) and the nightly trips out of the city to see the aurora borealis. Everything was well coordinated and we happened to be lucky enough to see the lights two (2) of the four (4) nights that we went out. Even when the lights were not visible (snowed one night and clouds the other), we sat around the campfire, enjoyed the conversation of the guides and other guests, roasted marshmallows and relaxed. The hotel was nice (Best Western Gold Rush Inn), and even had a small exercise room! The town of Whitehorse is a lot of fun to explore and has some good places to eat, don't miss Baked for breakfast (wheat blueberry scones and great espresso) or lunch. Cork and Bull serves great fresh food for dinner. Be aware that a lot of the restaurants are closed on Sundays.
Some guests were surprised at what the Aurora actually looks like (to the naked eye), so don't expect to see what you have seen in photo's etc. Most pictures are long exposures (30 seconds), capturing much more light than would be visible. We saw the lights vividly with bright green flares. We are already talking about another trip.
