Right from the get go I felt that I was walking into an authentic Italian restaurant. The decor, the lighting, and the staff made me feel like I was walking into a restaurant on Mulberry Street or Little Italy in Toronto. Being a 1st generation Italian, i'm always most critical of any Italian restaurant and measure every meal against my mother's home cooking; and Taverna didn't disappoint. The server was extremely knowledgeable and flawless in his pronunciation of every Italian reference on the menu; he was also honest about his opinions on everything. On to the food.
In the spirit of true Italian dining, the menu contained sections for appetizers, 2nd course, main course and desserts. I started with the carpaccio salad which was so thinly sliced I could barely get my fork under it! (This was a good thing in my opinion, some might say it was too thin) Topped with lovely greens and slices of fresh parmiggiano.
Collectively, the table had an antipasto platter with sicilian meatballs, olives, calamari, prawns wrapped in prosciutto. Highlight of the platter was the meatballs; outside of a kitchen in an Italian home, these were the best i've tasted.
For my 2nd, I had a very zesty minestrone. Perfect sized bowl as a 2nd course.
The main course I selected the Veal Parmiggiana. I asked the server how it was prepared because I didn't want the typical, commerical piece of veal you would get from an East Side Mario's that is so thickly breaded you can barely eat it. He told me it was only lightly floured and that sold it for me. When it was delivered it was just as promised; lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. Veal was very tender, sauce and parmiggiano distribution was just right; Wasn't drowning in either. Came with a side of fettucine done in a spicy arrabiata sauce.
I will be honest, I barely made it through the main course! We were so full from the apps and 2nds it truly felt like a Sunday lunch at my mom's! But I did manage to sneak in a limone gelato just because I had to!
All in all a tremendous experience and I would go back in a heartbeat! I would advise not eating all day before you go there! It's the day after and I still haven't been able to eat anything else!
And for all you celebrity buffs, Oprah Winfrey recently ate there and provided a glowing review on a signed picture along with a few pictures of her and the staff!
