Let me get to the point...we will never stay at another auberge/hotel in Quebec City other than J.A. Moisan's and we will change travel plans to make that happen.
I've read over all the other marvelous reviews of Auberge Moisan and can only say...go read them! Just in case I forget anything.
We arrived in the late afternoon and we met Clement in his fine gourmet grocery store that is below the Auberge. He helped us up with our luggage to the "1st floor" of the auberge where he proceeded to give us an excellent overview of Quebec City. He gave us two excellent suggestions for the type of restaurant we were interested in (local fare). He provided us with a tour of the public areas of the auberge which are extensive, comfortable, interesting, and charming. Almost as charming as Clement himself who is a wealth of knowledge and is eager to share it with his guests.
Our room had a view out a window to the street below. It was on the smallish size but the owner has done an excellent job in furnishing the room in such a way as to make it very usable and comfortable. The bed was fantastic (as were the sheets and pillows...very high quality). Lighting was excellent and plugs easily accesible for charging electronics. Shower head was devine and hot water was plentiful.
Let me mention that Clement St Laurent himself renovated/restored/recreated the space now offered as an Auberge from space formerly used as a residence and warehouse for the fine grocer below. The attention to detail in EVERYTHING is nothing short of astounding and makes for such a pleasant beautfiul stay.
The breakfast is cooked by Clement's talented wife who is a gourmet chef who apparently mascarades as an accountant (she should switch professions). She apparently attempts create a different menu for every day of your stay...so you never have the same dish twice. Each breakfast starts off with a smoothie made out of the freshest of fruits...much more interesting than the normal class of juice. Then there is 2nd course which for us one day was a marvelously fresh yogurt with granola and fruit. The second day however had this incredible grapefruit lightly broiled to caramelize the maple syrup on top and with dates and other goodies on the top. It was incredible. The 3rd dish one day was a souffel omelet with goat cheese and a tomato/avocado medley. We don't know how the omelet stayed on the plate. The 2nd day was a smoked trout eggs benedict that was perfection on a plate. seriously. perfection.
All of this was served by the ever delightful Clement who provided detailed information about our meal, the preserves, the salt!! Oh my gosh...the salt. Fabulous. We went right downstairs to the fine grocer and bought some to take home.
The location of the auberge is perfect. You never need to use your car within the city. So we had Clement park our car in his enclosed car park. The hotel isn't in the Lower or Upper "old" Towns...but just outside...maybe 3 blocks of the Upper Town This made it much quieter at night I think and felt more "local". The street has many interesting restaurants and food stores. We felt quite safe walking at night.
My husbands favorite hotel in the world is the Heritage Hotel in Nashville which just was ranked in the top 100 hotels in world by Travel & Leisure Magazine. He told me today that he likes Auberge J.A. Moisan just as much and maybe more because of the delightful Clement.
We will be back.
