“Fantastic honeymoon stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

Just returned from spending five nights at the Place d'Armes. What a wonderful way to start our married life -- I wouldn't change a single thing about our stay or the auberge!

We looked at a LOT of reviews before selecting a place to stay in Quebec City, and wanted a romantic, charming spot (but not too "frilly," per my husband's request). We agree completely with the many other positive TripAdvisor reviews of the Place d'Armes and are so, so happy with our choice. Everyone who we spoke with was friendly and extremely helpful.

We were perfectly fine with having a smallish room, which ours (number 21) would probably be considered. It wasn't tiny - just cozy - and it was plenty of space for us, even with five days' worth of clothes and whatnot. (We had asked for a room with a double spa tub and a view of the Frontenanc, and those were our priorities over having a huge room size.)

It's true that there is no elevator, so obviously if having to walk up stairs is a problem this would be a bad choice. But we definitely did not mind the stairs, especially since we spent the whole week eating and could stand to have a little extra exercise.

The included daily breakfast at le Pain Beni was wonderful. We so enjoyed starting each day in that space drinking great coffee and selecting from the breakfast options. And because we arrived after dark on our first evening in town and didn't feel up to venturing out for dinner that night, we decided to have our first dinner in Quebec there. The only problem with it was that we kept wanting to return every night after that! The entire meal was delightful. (Try the black pudding, seriously!)

Parking down the street was not too inconvenient and was very reasonably priced. And we very much appreciated being told that we could drive up in front of the auberge to quickly unload and load our car at check-in and check-out.

Finally, we also very much appreciated the champagne that was waiting in our room when we got there!

Again, I can not imagine a sweeter, more romantic place to have spent our honeymoon. The Place d'Armes was exactly what we were looking for - I will miss waking up to the sun streaming in our window and lighting up the Frontenac, and we can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: Room 21 has a double spa bath and a view of the Frontenac! It's cozy and sweet.

My husband and I stayed here for one night for part of our honeymoon this past July - the service was fantastic and the Marie Antoinette suite was lovely! They even had a bottle of champagne waiting for us in our room upon arrival! Great location and wonderful staff. The only thing that is a bit inconvenient is that you have to park about a few minutes walk away but this is similar for many hotels in Quebec City in the old town - I told my husband that this place existed before cars were invented so we had no problem! I would definitely return.

Room Tip: The Marie Antoinette suite is beautiful and has a view of the Chateau Frontenac.

Bonjour CoriSB,
Thank your for taking time to give us a feedback and thank your very much to have let us the pleasure to have you in your honeymoon. Your are right : the foundations of that part of the Auberge are from 1640 and the walls 1730 (well before cars)…. and until 3 years ago it was a wax museum. The Marie-Antoinette suite is so romantic and very very unique! In fact it is the only room in North America that have original panels from the Palace of Versailles. Those gilted panels where in the Marie-Antoinette exhibit in the wax museum and where shipped in Canada in 1922 for the opening of the Musée de Cire ( a branch of the famous Musée Grévin in France). In our renovations we have them restored and put them back after buying and restoring period furniture to complete the décor! Even the ornements on the 3 drawer chest come from France.
A room with character indeed!
All of our team work really hard, but with pleasure, to make sure our guests enjoy every seconds of their stay in Quebec city and feel <l’hospitalité québécoise>.
Thanks again and au plaisir donc de vous vous accueillir à l’Auberge Place d’Armes lors de votre prochain séjour.

This was our first trip to Quebec City so we had no idea where to stay. After a long search we decided on auberge Place d'Armes because it was so convenient. It was the perfect place. The room was small, but it was all we needed. The decor blended the old with the new beautifully. The shower was amazing! The staff was very friendly, helpful, full of recommendations. We were celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary. As usual my husband was planning many surprises and he needed help from the staff to make it all work. They were just fabulous and joined in on the planning with excitement. The restaurant was one of the best in the city. Be sure to drop off your luggage before you park. We found parking just a short walk from the Auberge and we thought it was very reasonable.

We will return to Quebec City and most definitely to Auberge Place d'Armes.

Room Tip: No elevator so you might want to request room on lower floor.

Spent four days here Oct 24 - 28th. Outstanding location.. in the heart of everything. The room was quaint, functional, a decent size and clean, but lacked a room safe. Nearby parking would have been nice.. you can expect to pay about $15/day for public underground parking. (Hint...Drop your bags off before parking the car because it's a long walk back uphill) The breakfasts were OUTRAGEOUS... The french toast and oatmeal were the best of the five excellent items we tried. We had a second floor room, and the climb tarnishes a bit of the charm after about 3 days... We were facing the street, and the early morning noises serve as an effective alarm clock.. expect to be up by 7am if you're in a front room. I'd stay here again, but make sure I reserved a first floor room in the rear of the building.

Room Tip: Rear first floor is the way to go...

Bonjour Loueye,
Merci for taking time to give us a feedback on your stay. What an excellent review and I agree with you our location is fantastic. At the corner of rue Ste-Anne and du Trésor the only 2 pedestrian streets in upper Town just in front of the Château Frontenac . I apologize for the morning noises but at the time of your stay they where rénovations made by the city on the street and we have no control ! As you have maybe read in other comments normally all the rooms are quiet front or rear !
I will pass to the Chef and his brigade your good words about breakfast, it is the most important meal of the day it as to be good !

Maybe at your next stay a brand new elevator will be waiting for you, it is plan for 2012!

Looking for an old-style in with rustic charm and warmly appointed rooms with exposed brick walls? You'll definitely find it here, including one of the city's top restaurants, Le Pain Beni (The Blessed Bread). Unfortunately, I got the last available room, no. 11, which was also the smallest, and had other problems: the large exhaust vent off the back of the hotel was not only noisy but shook the room, and the heating was broken. At 2am, I switched to nearby Hotel Champlain, run by the same owner, which was much better for my needs (heat and quiet). The owner seems like a lovely woman, and both hotels are family run.

Bonjour Depgirl,
Merci for taking the time to send in your comments and we always use the feedback we receive to improve and assure we will provide a better experience in the future. As your booking was a last minute one the only room available was room 11 with a rear view but as you can read in a prior comments here on TA : Our room was # 11 just at the top of the first flight of stairs, it was on the smallish size but what it lacked in stature it made up in charm. With a red brick wall, large comfy bed and flat screen tv. As your stay was in the beginning of october the individually heating systems where not turned on the new night auditor failed to make it work(He does know now!) At that point the only solution, because the hotel was full, was a change of hotel. We do apologize and we are happy that the suite we gived you at the Champlain for your stay fulfilled your needs.
Au plaisir

We stayed 3 nights (which is the perfect amount of time in Quebec City) with our goldendoodle. The Place d'Armes is very dog friendly, offering many rooms available to those traveling with dogs. Of all the cities we visited during our trip, we were the most fascinated by QC although it was voted least favorite by our dog. The 12 deck cruise ship Queen Elizabeth was in port and the streets were as crowded as Manhattan at rush house. As soon as the QE left port, a Crystal Cruise ship arrived. Our dog just couldn't deal with the intense crowds. Plus there was so many horse drawn carriages. She was completely freaked out by the horses. I would NOT recommend taking a dog (we noticed we were definitely in the minority).

The location of the Place d'Armes is absolutely perfect! We looked out our little window at the Frontenac and enjoyed the view especially at night. At first we were concerned about noise from the pedestrian street, but with the windows closed and the a/c on fan, we didn't hear a sound (even within the hotel). The stone walls created a wonderful ambiance, even in the shower. We were on the road for 30 days and we voted the Place d'Armes bathroom our very favorite (great shower and cool sink). Although the room was small, we were very comfortable. The breakfast was better than we had anticipated. Ordering off of the menu, we were able to have exactly what we wanted. I must admit that it was a hassle dropping off the bags, getting them up the steep stairs into the little reception then up more stairs (no elevator) to the room. Then driving around to find the public parking. (but that's certainly less than the Frontenac valet fee). It seems that we kept forgetting items in our trunk so we journeyed to and from the car park often. Overall, I cannot imagine staying anywhere else. Everyone seems to think they want to stay at the Frontenac, but once inside, it's just a large old hotel. It's better to stay across the park and enjoy it from the Place d'Armes plus save $100 +++. We ended up staying 4 nights in QC (which was too long) and included 2 day trips--one to Ile d'Orleans (we drove the entire island and loved the quaint villages), another day we drove to Baie St. Paul to see the art festival and eat at Mouton Noir (neither impressed us).

Due to a change in our itinerary, we ended up staying at Hotel Champlain for the first night which is a good choice if the Place d'Armes is not available. The rate was exactly the same ($189 CA) but for the same price, you are buying so much more ambiance at the Place d'armes.

Bonjour Golden Judy
The entire team of the Auberge Place d’Armes would like to thank you for your wonderful review. Your comments are a source of motivation for us.
With his unique location it is so easy, as you mentioned it, to walk all over the city and discover all the charms of Quebec. The hotel has a lot of character since it is 2 old buildings joined together. In our rénovations we did our best to save the old stone walls , while adding modern amenities to provide you an unique and quiet stay ; each room is unique in size and décor. Thanks for your vote on our bathroom !
We are the only small hotel in town with a quality restaurant and this allows us to offer morning, noon and evening meals of quality. Glad you enjoyed it ! Next time, on arrival, just call the front desk and they will waiting outside and take care of the luggage or use in high season our valet service.
Au plaisir donc de vous vous accueillir à l’Auberge Place d’Armes lors de votre prochain séjour.

We had room #1, which was a junior suite with a queen and murphy bed. At first we thought it would be noisy as it was the closest room to the front desk. But we found that it was awesome in that it was a convenient for loading luggage, easy to come in and out to drop stuff off during our daily excursions, and quieter that a regular room in a large scale hotel. The room had unique decor, awesome shower and basin in the bathroom. Fridge in the closet was an excellent bonus...and the fact that it featured a light that truned on when you opened it was appreciated. Wall mounted tv with articulating mount, also appreciated. Exposed stone was nice a cosy feeling. Fireplace nice, we used it.

Parking a few minute walk away, not a big deal. Plan around it.

Our only regret is that we discovered how awesome the restaurant is for dining on the last night we were there. Pain Beni. You don't have to travel for an awesome meal. The breakfasts are great...the dinner was unforgettable...gnocchi, potato/lobster soup, and a chocolate bar thing with sweet potato ice cream.

You get what you pay for. The price is definitely worth it.

Bonjour NickiDubb,

Merci for taking time to give us a feedback on your stay. Until 3 years ago that part of the hotel was a wax museum. In our renovations we tried to take advantage of the 1730 old walls and add modern amenities to give you the feeling of Old Quebec.
We also try with little plus like chocolate on the pillows, next day laundry service, free internet , fridge in the room, tea and coffee available all day long to provide a unique stay for our guests and feel l’hospitalité Québécoise !
I will pass to the Chef and his brigade your good words about breakfast and dinner ! Just to let you know as we describe the Pain Beni as a bistronomic restaurant that works with local ingredients according to season our new menu will be available in 2 weeks !
Au plaisir donc de vous vous accueillir à l’Auberge Place d’Armes lors de votre prochain séjour.
