“Great but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

We have always loved this hotel but hadn't been back for ten years - we usually stay with friends in Québec but decided to have a treat at an old favourite. I booked on-line and used a booking site to do so and didn't read the fine print.
We knew that the place was enlarged and much changed but were welcomed warmly and really liked our room, but on the first morning found that the breakfast wasn't included - seems to be a particular policy of theirs toward third-party bookings: the first time I have ever come accross this in all my travels. Annoying but we had a great breakfast at our favourite place that is much nicer than the restaurant that the hotel uses.
A small detail to some but enough to make us not want to come back or to recommend it - so many hotels in Québec have been taken over and turned into tourist traps - it seems that the Acadia is going down the same path.

we have stayed at Hote Acadia every October for many years, and love it. Yes, the stairs are steep and the corridors narrow, but every room has its own charm, the amenities all work well, and the place is quiet and well located.
Skip the free breakfast, though, and go to Casse Crepe Breton, down on rue St. John.
We will be there next year!

Room Tip: Try to get a Queen, and try for lower floors.

Staying within the wall of the city is sometime unaffordable but very romantic & of course convinient! Here we have a european style hotel in an old building so expect tight hallways and tiny rooms but who stay in their rooms while visiting Quebec? This is not a luxury hotel so forget the pool, fitness center etc... It is quaint but very clean and confortable. Centrally located, valet parking which in the area is very usefull since you do not need the car, just walk ! this is Quevec city. The bathroom was tiny but efficient and while the breakfast was buffet style the service was acceptable and friendly. I would recommand this establisment. without hesitation!

Room Tip: Inquire for the different rooms with the front desk it goes from small no view to large appartment...

After entering past reception and walking the 53 stairs to our room at the Acadia, we as I expect some others have done, tried to get a Wi-Fi connection as quickly as we could to double-check if this was the same Hotel we had viewed photos of and read about as it just did not match up.

We had just left a delightful B&B in Montreal and were looking forward to something just a little more luxurious, but this is not the Acadia we entered in Quebec City. What we saw was a tired looking hotel when we passed the reception area with threadbare carpeted stairs and just as tired and dark small room with threadbare bedspread ( see photo that had a few hangars next to the tea making facilities and an ironing board on the wall where you enter). This was nearly half the size of the B&B we had just left for which we had paid half the price for . Our bathroom however was more than acceptable & clean.
Looking at some other reviews from travellers who had found the same thing, the owners response on Trip Advisor was that this is a 200 year old building and next time you stay at the Acadia ask for a different room. Regardless of the age of the building there is no excuse for threadbare dirty carpet at this price and when one travels from the other side of the world it will be a while until we are back in Quebec, let alone in the Acadia, so suggesting one asks for a different room next time is a silly response.
There may be one or two rooms that look like the photos on the web, but we did not get one and not sure what one has to do to secure these, but we felt let down.
Future travellers have a right to know what they are potentially walking into and paying for. Whilst accepting Hotels in this area cost higher, we did not feel we had received good value for money.
There are though quite a few positives- the location of the Hotel within the walls is excellent- as clearly are many, many other hotels up & down the nearby streets in this wonderful area.
The breakfast at the nearby restaurant Le Feu Sacra is a very good buffet and was the best element of our Acadia stay- they also serve a great dinner.
The staff at the Acadia are very personable and helpful and deserve great credit as do the staff who have to clean these rooms and try and make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
The final positive is that whilst there was some street noise on the saturday night we had no noise from any other guests.

Room Tip: Get a solid commitment on exactly what type of room you are going to get before booking

Our three night reservation was booked for us by the tourist info office in Montreal. When we arrived, there was no record of it but we were offered one of their apartments at the same rate! We ended up staying all week. Our apartment was huge, with a large living room with fireplace and flat screen t.v., couch, two comfy chairs, writing desk and chair, a giant eat-in kitchen with French window-doors to a lovely back deck with table and two chairs for morning coffee. A large bedroom and a big bathroom with tub/shower. All for $129 a night plus the huge tax of course. Close to everything, walked everywhere, had naps in the afternoon and headed out again. Very friendly staff in a small hotel made up of several eighteenth century homes. Loved every minute of it. Top floor so very quiet, practically on top of lovely cafes and bistros...the Conti, Cafe de Paris, Hotel Frontenac just a few blocks away. Clip-clopping of horse carriages out front. We're going back!!

Hotel Acadia is an affordable, centrally located place to stay. It is about a 10 minute walk to the main center area (close to Hotel Frontenac). The breakfast provided by a neighboring restaurant was excellant: buffet - all you can eat american style with, eggs, bacon, toast, bagels, fruit, crepe's etc.. Also the parking was valet style and quite reasonable (a one time fee of $18 despite the number of days). The economical rooms are smallish, or at least the 2 we stayed in, but quite adequate for the average traveler/couple whom do not intend to stay inside for long periods. Larger rooms are available at higher price of course. Also, the rooms in the upper floors are somewhat difficult to access with narrow stairs. Bus boys were available to move luggage. Clean, bright and attractive - recommended for the budget minded traveller.

Room Tip: Request a lower floor if you may struggle with stairs and ask if there is a bus boy to carry luggage...

Nice and clean room. Excellent service with a very friendly and competent staff. Hotel location is great for touring the city. Breakfast was served in a nearby place (2 min walk); which we found strange at first but it was ok. Spa water could be cleaner though...
