5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

We stayed at Le Manoir d'Auteuil on two separate occasions -- the first time because of positive TripAdvisor reviews and the second time because of our wonderful experience during our first stay. We can't say enough positive things about this small boutique hotel. It's conveniently located just inside the walls of the old city (near St. Jean's gate), with easy access to the attractions/restaurants in the old city as well as restaurants, ATMs and other services in downtown Quebec. Each hotel room is unique, comfortably furnished and charmingly decorated. (We stayed in a different room on each visit and also had the opportunity to view 2 additional rooms.) As other reviewers have noted, the hotel has no elevator so we suggest requesting a room on a lower floor if that's an issue. We took advantage of the optional breakfast buffet during both visits; it provided a pleasant start to each day and saved us the time and hassle of going out to a café. The hotel has expanded into the adjacent building since our first visit and now also offers a lounge/bar area for guests (as well as additional rooms). The hotel staff was outstanding -- extremely friendly and helpful (offering sightseeing and restaurant recommendations and making reservations). Parking isn't ideal (they facilitate parking at a public garage just outside the walls for an additional charge), but we expect parking would be an issue almost anywhere you stay within the old city. However, we basically parked our car for the duration of our stay and walked everywhere, so it wasn't a problem.

Bonjour! Thank you so very much for taking the time to write a review. I am truly honored that you enjoyed your stay with us so much that you chose to come back a second time. Coming from New Hampshire, you are really not too far, a 6 to 8 hour car ride I imagine. Clients who come regularly are such a treat for us, as we really get the chance to get to know them. I sincerely appreciate your support, and for choosing to stay with us. Being a small business, we do not have the marketing budget that the large chains do, so word of mouth is our biggest advertising. So thank you for sharing your hotel experience with the trave community. I hope we will have the chance to welcome you here again with us in the not too distant future! Un gros merci, Linda

We were here for 4 nights and would be happy to stay here again if we had the same room. The hotel had pretty art decor touches, and the staff was pleasant and accommodating. Our room, 31, was great: it faced the park in front, was a nice size, clean, flat screen tv, desk, pretty art decor headboard, street noise was muffled by double windows and heavy curtains. Once in a while there was a tiny whiff of cigarette smoke but we never figured out where it was coming from and it only happened a few times. The bathroom was standard: bathtub with shower curtain, toilet, and sink and very clean. (Note: If you want a large bed or firm mattress, skip this room. Also be aware that a few of the other rooms are pretty small with not-so-great views). We only heard TV noise one night and a call downstairs quickly stilled it. No elevator which we were fine with--the hotel has a lovely wrought iron staircase.

This hotel is just inside the wall in Upper Town. It's about a 10 minute walk to the steps for Lower Town. (The whole town is walkable; you don't need a car unless you're leaving Old Quebec or can't walk far.) If you want to be where the action is (e.g., parks with entertainers, etc.), you may want a different hotel, but this hotel is fairly quiet at night and close to restaurants and shops, and we were comfortable walking around in the evening on the main streets. (On the other side of the wall is a beautiful romantic fountain for an evening stroll.)

The $7 breakfast is worth it--you won't get as much for $7 at the restaurants--fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, bread/toast, orange juice, hot chocolate, croissants, and a few other items. (The chocolate croissants are wonderful--people waited for them and pounced when they came out.) Water and orange juice are served in small, several ounce glasses, but we simply got up and refilled our glasses from the pitchers so it was fine.

Keep in mind that this is basically a B&B--no vending machines, no one at the desk after 11, etc. (Although we were told a person can be reached after 11 by dialing 0.) Highly recommend asking for directions to a convenience store when you check in--there are several--to stock up on beverages and snacks. (The convenience store on a side street off St. Louis has fresh grapes/cheese packets and a number of other items.)

Fodor's recommends this hotel for value, and we certainly agree!

Bonjour, and thank you for taking the time to write such an extensive review of your experience with us. I am thrilled you enjoyed your stay with us and want to thank you for your support. Yes, we are a small hotel, but we do live on site, so when you dial "0", you basically will get myself or the receptionist who is on call at night.

Throughout the hotel, we only offer 1 queen beds and king bed rooms, (with the exception of the former chapel...two twins). I recommend consulting our web site, then clicking on the room categories to see the photos of the corresponding rooms. If you are willing to spend a little more, the deluxe king and junior suites are definitely worth it. Our mattresses are a pillow top Beauty Rest mattress from Simmons, which we love for comfort.

On the value side, the european rooms, situated on the 4th floor are a good option as well. Your room, 31, is a classic queen room, and does have a lovely parliament park hill view. We continually monitor the prices in the area for comparable hotels to make sure that we are indeed competitive. We are not the least expensive, nor the most, but we really do have high quality touches that in my opinion, make us a good value. Although only a 3 star, we have very high quality mattresses, linens, and a wonderful climate control system in the rooms.

Again, my sincerest appreciation for the review. I am glad you enjoyed the chocolate croissants so much. Take care, and I hope we will have the chance to welcome you again. Wishing you many happy travels ahead, Linda

Everything about Hotel Manoir d"Auteuil was perfect: location made it an easy walk to explore the Old City. The staff could not have been more helpful, especially Lucia who gave us many helpful tips and arranged the booking of a 2 hour walking tour. We were especially appreciative that the two night minimum stay was waived as we were starting a bike tour the next day.

Room Tip: One should note that there is no elevator and rooms are reached by two or three flights of stairs.

Bonjour Mme. Butterfly,
I am delighted you enjoyed your stay with us and that you had the chance to meet Lucia. I will pass along your kind comments, as they will truly make her smile. The walking tour is something we like to recommend to our clients, as it is a great way to get your berrings in Old Quebec, not to mention a great way to learn about the beautiful architecture and rich history of Quebec.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this review and to share your experiences with the travel community. You are also wise to mention the elevator, but please do keep in mind, we do also have first floor rooms available for anyone who has difficulty with stairs.

Again, thank you for your support, and for choosing to stay with us. I hope we will once again have the chance to welcome you here with us. Merci, Linda

This was our first trip to Quebec City looking for a slice of Europe without having to cross the big pond. We struck gold at this Hotel. No complaints whatsoever. We will go back again. Outstanding location - you don't need a car and can walk everywhere. The staff was super friendly, the room was very elegant, clean and functional all at the same time. We stayed in room #8 which we were told was Edith Piaf's room when she came to Quebec. Breakfast can be had for an extra $7 per person and the croissants are made on the premisies. It is a continenatal type breakfast with breads, croissants, jellies and jams, cereals, fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs and great coffee and teas.If you're looking for old world charm meaning you don't want to stay in the Hilton or the Lowe's and you're not into staying in the 800 room Chateau Frontenac then I would highly recommend this classy 3 star hotel.

Bonjour M. Andrew. I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us in Edith Piaf's former room. Room 8 is one of our vintage junior suites, and yes, definitely some Old World Charm. The junior suites are substantially more spacious than our one queen and european rooms, but if you have the budget, I highly recommend reserving one. Being a very small property, we cannot offer all of the amenities that a large chain hotel can, but I feel that the small historic properties like ours are some of the true treasures of Old Quebec. You can stay in a chain anywhere, but staying in a small hotel in Quebec City can really be a magical experience.

My sincerest thanks for taking the time to write a review. We depend on word of mouth for advertising, as we do not have the big advertising budgets that the hotel chains do. I also believe that the reviews are a great tool for travellers to make the right lodging choice for them when planning a vacation. So, thank you! Take care, and I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you here with us again. Merci, Linda

Having spent months planning a first visit to QC...booking and cancelling numerous hotel reservations...trying to understand city layout...parking amenities...friendly staff...I hit jackpot. I loved the hotel's location right inside the walls....across from park...away from the extreme hustle and bustle...easy walk to anything you wished to get to....staff couldn't have been nicer...breakfast was perfect way to start the day and leave room for later indulgences. We were spoiled with room, overlooking park...a wonderful experience for three nights...is it really over?

Bonjour M. Bob, Thank you so very much for your kind comments! I am tickled pink you enjoyed your stay with us so much. It sounds like you did a lot of research in planning your trip to Quebec City, and in doing so, made the right hotel choice for you. We do have an excellent location, and if you get a parliament view room, the sounds of the horse and buggies as they trot by mix in with the sounds of a modern city.... a touch of the past with the present. I believe, without a doubt, that the small hotels within the walls of the Old City, like ourselves, are some of the true treasures of Quebec City. You can always stay at a chain anywhere, but this is one of the only places in North America where you can really feel like you are in Europe, and the small boutique properties are a genuine part of that Old Quebec Old World experience.

My sincerest thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the travel community. We truly appreciate your support and encouragement. I hope we will have the chance to welcome you here with us again one day. Un gros merci, Linda

Stayed two nights for pleasure. Owners and staff very helpful and on sight. Very nice decor in rooms and lobby. Had a chance to sit down after check in to have a beer and wine to plan our touring. Parking very convenient and that is a big plus due to being in the old city walls. Definitely worth the price.

Bonjour Michael, I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us, and especially that you liked our decor. The building dates to 1835, but due to a fire in the early 1920's, the interior was completely redone in the art deco style during the 1930's. With the recent renovations, we have really tried to keep the art deco spirit throughout, and of course, refused to remove any of the authentic art deco details. I am not sure which room you stayed in, but some of the junior suite rooms still have the vintage bathrooms that date to the 1930's. Most of the light fixtures and chandeliers throughout the hotel are original to the 1930 remodel. I have become an art deco convert since owning the hotel, and really enjoyed the creative process with the remodel.

Thank you for your kind words, and for taking the time to share your experience with the travel community. We truly appreciate it. Hopefully we will have the chance to welcome you both again to Quebec City one day. Un gros merci, Linda

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights prior to our cruise and were very pleased. Just inside the old city walls and very close to Rue St. Jean which is a main drag for restaurants and fun stuff. Just remember that Quebec has streets that go up and down, so enjoy the downhill swing as it reverses on the way back. Extremely friendly staff that answered our emails promptly; offered to confirm any reservations we had and helped with advice and seemed that they were genuinely pleased that you were there . Originally was going to utilize the hotel's parking (4 spaces in back), but because of the city's music fest decided to drop the rental car at the airport and taxi on in. As others have stated, the hotel is sans elevator. We were in Room #5 which is on the ground floor (in the back), so no stairs which was nice as we had some luggage. The drawback is that the room is a little small (about on par with a lot of European rooms); has no closet; has 2 single beds and is a split level format. It was however very quiet and does have individual room temp. controls (Quebec was warm and we were happy that we had A/C) and a nice bathroom. The hotel is across from a park and is a good location to scope out the town. Nice intimate bar area with 2 for 1 drinks ($8). Breakfast was fine with delicious croissants (do not miss the chocolate ones); juices and fresh fruit. Other options are available in the area. All in all an inviting choice with a great location. Would stay here again. Note: the hotel responds to comments on this site which to me is a good sign vs. just ignoring what concerns people have.

Room Tip: Since the hotel has no elevator, you should either ask for a lower level room or count on having the...

Bonjour M. Gatorboy, (I love your online name!), I am thrilled you enjoyed your stay with us in the former chapel of the manor. You have done a great job of outlining our location, and I appreciate that. We do have a perfect location for visiting the historic Old City, and it sounds like you took full advantage of that. With September just around the corner, we will start to see more seniors at the hotel, so I appreciate you mentioning the "sans elevator" and hills. Quebec City is full of hills! So you can definitely eat all of the chocolate croissants you want while staying with us in Old Quebec, because you will most likely burn off those buttery calories.

Your room, room 5 - the former chapel, is situated on the 1st floor of the hotel. We have many lower floor rooms that are ideal for anyone with difficulty using stairs, but we do need to know this information at the time of reservation, or you might find yourself on an upper floor.

Again, many thanks for the detailed review. Being a small business, we depend on word of mouth from clients like you. Your support is truly appreciated. Un gros merci, and I wish many happy travel memories ahead! Sincérment, Linda
