“Lovely hotel in a great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

We drove into Quebec City after dark. It was snowing and we hadn't booked a hotel. We tried a couple of places but they didn't appeal and then we found this hotel in the old part of the city. It was early in the new year and very quiet so they had vacancies. Rates were really competitive and for just a few dollars extra a full breakfast for two was included in the price. Our room was a good size with a great view over the city. Bathroom was on the small side but that wasn't a deal breaker.

Hotel staff was courteous and friendly and happy to help with any queries we had. It was late when we arrived on the first night so we had dinner in the hotel restaurant. We had the restaurant all to ourselves that night but were still offered full choice from the dinner menu. The food and service was very good.

The hotel has an interesting history. It started off as a house in 1858 and became a hotel in 1870, making it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, hotels in old Quebec. It is very close to Le Chateau Frontenac, the statue of Samuel de Champlain (the founder of Quebec City) and great views over the city and the St Lawrence river.

What a great review!!! Thank you so much for your stay in our hotel. As you mentioned it, the history of the hotel is pretty spectacular and for your information, we are the oldest hotel in Canada and second one in North America. We are glad that you have enjoyed you room and the restaurant prooving that the age of the hotel does not affect the product and the service that we offer!!! We will probably see you back soon and you will be more than welcome.
Thanks again for your stay in our establishment.
Best regards

This hotel is located in the perfect area, close to the funicular to go to the lower town, and close to the walls leading to the main part of upper town. Great service by the staff, and you can park in the underground parking across the street (underneath city hall) for cheap ($16 per 24 hours).

Thank you for your comment!! We are happy to see that you have been able to enjoy the greatness of our location. As you mentioned, people can park by themselves in the public parking in front of the hotel or benefit of the in and out as you want service offered by the valet service of our hotel for 25$+taxes per night.
We hope to see you back soon. You will be more than welcome to stay here again.
Best regards,

Loved the location of this hotel. The staff was very helpful. Parking was very convenient. Wish the bar and a better wine selection and stayed open later. Would definitely stay there again and recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Quebec City

This hotel had a staff that was friendly and knowledgable staff. The location was great for exploring the old city. The price was very reasonable, especially considering that this was the last weekend of Quebec winter carnival. I would definitely return here.

Very cozy ambience.
Staff is polite and caring.
Very good situated, near everything that we want to see in Québec.
Bar and band is a plus. We enjoyed sippering a drink at the bar listening to a talented band.
We've been there twice and will come back.

The Hotel Clarendon was recommended to me by a work colleague but before I booked, I checked the reviews of Trip Advisor. As you can readily see, the reviews are a little uneven but essentially correct. The location is wonderful – the hotel is centrally located and within easy walking distance of major attractions, shopping and restaurants and if you’re looking for accommodations with great character and history like the great hotels of Canada such as the Royal York in Toronto but slightly scaled down, then the Clarendon is the place for you. There are some comments on Trip Advisor about the rooms and décor being dated but they are exactly as depicted in the hotel web site. They aren’t made up of gleaming brass and porcelain but they are very clean, well maintained and comfortable. We had breakfast in the dining room and it was very impressive with its high ceilings and superb atmosphere. What are the downsides? Statements on Trip Advisor suggest that the hotel management has changed recently and presumably for the better. The front desk and concierge are staffed by very enthusiastic and friendly personnel who are also very young and inexperienced. There were several mistakes made with respect to our reservation including the number of people in our group and the charges for breakfast that even with some adjustments reflected in a costlier hotel bill. I’m fairly confident that these issues will be ironed out over time, however, even with these negatives, I would recommend the Clarendon as a place to stay in Quebec City.

Thank you for having taken the time to write a review about our hotel. Constructive comments like yours are the best ones in order for us to know what to improve and how to improve it. You can be certain that our staff have seen your review and will surely behave the good way if another billing mistake occurs again. Most of them are effectively pretty young, but we think that it brings life back in our old hotel. Let's say that we gain experience in being confronted to problems and situations that we are not used too. You surely helped one of our front desk agent to get better in the job that he or she is doing. Regarding your stay, we are happy to see that you have been able to enjoy the benefits of our location and that your overall stay has been the way you wanted it to be. Thank you so much and we hope to see you back again soon.

We stayed at the hotel from December 3oth to January 2nd. We didn't have a car and were able to visit everything we wanted to by foot because the hotel is right in the Vieux Québec and a street away from the Château Frontenac, Terrasses Dufferin, (in upper town), lower town, Port Royal etc etc. The service was good - expect a 100$/night incidental ''just in case'' fee when you check in. It is an older hotel and could use some upgrades but we had no problems as it was clean nor was it noisy. Highly recommend.

What a great comment! Thanks for having taken the time to write a review.
We are presently upgrading our rooms slowly so it will be probably better again during your next stay. Coming in to visit without a car is as you mentioned not a problem for our guests since all the tourists attractions are nearby and can be made walking.
We hope to see you soon back...maybe during summer this time?
Best regards,
