“Don't Expect A Typical 4 Star Experience (Not What You Think)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Visited the Chateau for a couple of days fresh off a visit to Montreal earlier. May have picked a bad weekend though. Concierge let me know that it was the 1x per year that the Canadian construction industry is on holiday, and Old Quebec and to a certain extent the hotel too, was a bit overrun with visitors. So, for a 500 room hotel, that meant that the breakfast/brunch restaurant was a bid of a madhouse with an exceedingly long line just to put a name on a list; and amenities such as the indoor pool is really too small given the size of the hotel and the amount of guests. The locker rooms could use a good sprucing up too.

Be aware: The Hotel IS a prime tourist site in Old Quebec and the Hotel welcomes all manner of visitors and tourists into its public areas and restaurants (but mercifully, not the bathrooms. You need a hotel key for that!). As a result, if you are a guest in the hotel paying $500 plus a night, you compete with tourists who mobbed the lobby all day long.

The staff (concierge) and front desk were for the most part what you expect from a Fairmont: Supremely pleasant, professional and helpful. The concierge sent us to a very good restaurant (MC Chef) on our second night and helped us with another restaurant we had chosen for the first night (La Patriarche).

The room was very nice and well-appointed. Try to get a room in one of the "turret" lines of the hotel (we were in 421) for a nice semi-circle view of the Seaway. The room alone bumped up my review to 4 stars from 3.5.

Buffet breakfast was good (but you could have a line (no reservations) during peak peak time. wine and cheese bar has nice views and good wine selection (although the staff needs to brush up on its knowledge of what's on the list).

Overall, a nice Fairmont experience, that could be improvement by Management if they are focused.

Room Tip: Gold Floor, or something in one of the rounded turret lines of rooms.

Over priced. Interior is shabby and not very clean. There is a bad smell in the lobby that never goes away. The rooms are on the small side and not up to much. The gym is average. The changing rooms are not very nice, and under repair. The steam room is dirty. You pay for the name, history, and location... But, upon reflection, it's not worth the price.

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel

My wife and I stayed at Chateau Frontenac three nights in early July. As many others have noted here, it is a truly splendid and impressive property. Fairmont hotels can be dowagers--plenty of luxury, though showing some age spots. The Frontenac does have a few floors closed for renovation, but those in use are in tip-top shape, as are the lobby, bars, and restaurants. In fact, the hotel actually looks better than it did nearly fifteen years ago, when we stayed there the first time. We heard no noise from the construction work and saw only an occasional worker.

We had snagged a three-nights-for-the-price-of-two reservation and hoped we wouldn't be disappointed--it's no secret that hotels often pair their bargain offers with less desirable rooms. No worries, though--the room we got was a huge king-bedded suite on the seventeenth floor, with four windows directly overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The furniture and appointments were new and beautiful, and there was a spacious sitting area with a comfortable sofa as well two occasional chairs.

As Fairmont presidents' club members we bypassed the crowd in the lobby and checked in at a special area on the fourteenth floor, where we were showed around the concierge level. The staff were all very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. We were quite surprised by the extent and quality of amenities, including an expansive free breakfast from around seven to ten a.m. and an equally impressive spread of breads, cheeses, fruit, and prepared appetizers from five to eight p.m. Beer, wine, and liquor was available throughout the day and evening on an honor system, and tea, coffee, soft drinks and bottled water were free (though you're asked to record what you take on a small notecard for the purpose of inventory control). The complimentary offerings were so extensive and tasty that you could, if you liked, eat nowhere else during your stay--though you'd probably come to regret not sampling the great restaurants, bistros, and cafes throughout the old city.

What really makes the Frontenac experience special is the quality of the service. It's a Francophone hotel, of course, but everyone speaks English readily--I wish my own pitiful French were a quarter as fluent. The staff are so cheerful and helpful--there wasn't a single person who didn't seem to be enjoying his/her job.

Sure, Chateau Frontenac is expensive--no argument. But there are deals to be found--the one we got turned out to be terrific. Anyway, we've paid even more at other places...and forgotten them a lot quicker.

Room Tip: Try for a high room with a view of the river. The hotel's web site specifies room sizes, so you...

Got caught out with online room advertised at 150.00 and then told they never put anyone in those rooms and I had to be upgraded. Room was fine but nothing special and had to keep blinds down as workman outside window on scaffolding and the room just looked into other rooms but cost 255.00 plus taxes. I would not stay there again but worthwhile for the experience of being right in old city and in such an historic building. Buffet Breakfast in renovated restaurant which was very nice but food wise poor given the cost $30.00.

Room Tip: I guess the more money you spend the better the room but $300 a night does not get you anything spec...

What a location!!! An amazing building dominating the Quebec City landscape. From the moment you are greeted by the valet parking staff, you know you are in for a treat.

All the staff welcome you with a smile and friendly "bonjour"! That counts for a lot in my opinion.

Room was fine, quality linen and plenty of towels and toiletries supplied.

Mini bar prices were well overpriced so we didn't purchase from that.

The pool and gym facilities were great. Iced water flavored with citrus fruit readily available as was fresh fruit. Good equipment in the gym and friendly pool staff. Lovely pool and very warm jacuzzi.

Would love to return one day!

Once again, this was a memorable experience at the Château Frontenac. The hotel underwent renovations. The room (number 6157) had a great view of Terrasse Dufferin and the fleuve! It is worth paying the extra to get a view from the fleuve even if you spend all day shopping and visiting the city. This room was very quiet and I could not hear the neighbours from upstairs or beside me. Looking forward to a next stay.

Room Tip: Get a room with a riverview (fleuve). You have free wifi if you are member of Fairmont (free member...
