“One of the best meals ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

I ate at Chez L'Epicier with colleagues this evening and was very impressed! The staff were attentive but not intrusive, friendly and knowledgeable. The ambiance was wonderful. The meal was probably one of the best I've ever had! This is definitely a restaurant I will return to in the future!

“Serious food, serious prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012 via mobile

We really enjoyed the food here. My entree of braised octopus and pork belly was delicious, as was his foie gras terrine with beets and brioche maison. A main of chicken tartin with supreme of cabbage was mostly successful and the filet of beef with sauce bordelaise was perfect. The best dish of the night was a dessert of apple baignet with apple tart, apple sorbet and chocolate crumbs. The interior is rustic and comfortable. The wine menu is heavily weighted to the high end. We are Australian and the only wine from there was a Barrossa red at CAD 420. They have wines by the glass.

“Catastrophic”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

On the recommendation of our hotel concierge, we chose this place to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Big mistake! It was to be an evening to remember, but not in the way we hoped. We sat down at 6.30pm and opted for the 7-course tasting menu. At 9pm we had still not got to the main course, and were kept waiting for 1 whole hour (!) between the 3rd and 4th courses. We finally got the dessert around 10.15 and managed to make our escape just after 10.30. The food? We were long since past caring by then! Our special evening had been comprehensively ruined and we had paid CAN $264 for the privilege (comprising food for 2 with wine accompaniment for 1). Take it from us: when in Montreal, avoid L'Epicier!

Dear Yertuag, please allow me to express our most sincere apologies for the wait you endured during your dinner. Be ensured that we take great pride in serving our customers in a time frame that is suitable for them. It is certainly not common to wait that long and I hope you will do us the favor of giving Chez L’épicier another try. Sincerely,

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Having read previous reviews we were expecting an enjoyable and interesting meal. Our first impression of the food was negative, with an "amuse bouche" of sun-dried tomato macaroon that tasted only of strong burnt garlic. My wife had the scallops with apple risotto. The scallops were very good but the rice was too strongly flavored, and the whole dish difficult to eat in a long, narrow and deep "boat". I had the Dore (Walleye). The fish was well cooked and tasty but came with a large baked onion, and some grey and green paste that was supposed to taste of fennel according to the menu -- the presentation was fussy and the accompaniments did nothing to enhance the flavor of the fish. When the server asked how the meal was, my wife asked that the chef be made aware of the difficulty she had cutting the scallops in the "boat" -- the server smiled and agreed but I saw her face harden as she was turning away. In retrospect we should have been warned seeing that the restaurant has only commented on favorable reviews on this website, apparently ignoring anything negative!

Dear A B, thank you kindly for having taken a moment to share these comments on Trip Advisor. I take good note of your wife’s difficulty with the plate we used to serve the scallop risotto. In regards to the fish, I’m sorry it was not up to your expectations. I also wish to apologise about the bad service impression you had.

Now about your comment on our responses; we take pride in responding to the reviews we receive about our restaurant, whichever rating they show, and especially the negative ones. These less positive comments are in most cases made in our best interest and we listen to them carefully, as they are the voice of our customers. Also, please know that it takes 3 opening days to Trip Advisor to post the owner’s responses on their website after they are sent. It is possible you saw a negative review before we had the time to respond to it. It takes between 20 minutes and 1 hour to write each reply; we’re happy to take this time to show our guests (and the readers!) that we care about what they think and that we appreciate the time they take out of their busy life to express their feelings about the food, the service or the décor of our restaurant.
All the reviews before September 2011 don’t have any responses for the simple reason that we started to reply to our critiques only a year ago.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write your comments on Trip Advisor; we hope you’ll give us another try. Best regards,

“good birthday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Very good food and service. Took my girlfriend for her birthday and she loved it. Pork shoulder was excellent. Bottles of wine were not cheap but you can buy wine by the glass as well. We had one appetizer, two main course, one dessert, and three glasses of wine total. With tip the bill was $195. The creme brulee was unique because it came in four small dishes and each one was a different flavour, very good.
