“Faithfull customer for over 30 years and more to come”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Yup, been going for what seems like foreaver! Why?
Consistency, great food, ample menu, fondues, the best rack of lamb in Montreal, friendly and pleasant staff (hello Marcel from Lulu), Derek the charming owner, the decor, cozy, the live piano, the real fireplace, the romantic atmosphere, the good affordable wines and on and on and on...
Last but not least, at a very reasonable price. Yes you can dine in style (3 courses) for two with wine for a little over $100.
It is one of those places that you want to come back to when you just want to have a good time.

“Not just a fondue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

Swiss food always makes you think of cheese fondues and the 1970's plus the fondue set you probably have hidden at the back of a cupboard. But if you're in Montreal don't miss this place. Atmospheric, great friendly service (even if the pianist should come with a volume control). We were there in the middle of the icestorm and the open fires and warm welcome were much appreciated! The food isn't limited to fondue but do try it - it is simply the best fondue I have ever had. We were a party of six and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. It's certainly on my "must go back to" list.

“Good food, excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

I have been to this restaurant several times now and I am never disappointed. The food is always great, especially the lamb. The waiters are all friendly with a good sense of humour. It's the perfect restaurant for when I'm in the mood for a treat.

“charming, cozy swiss scene - great fondue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Our family of 4 ate here new years eve. Other reviews said it was dark - but at night there were fires burning with piano player and lots of coziness. The fondue was really good. My kids didn't like the cheese - but loved the meat and chocolate. Great evening

“Sorry, not worth the value of a discount coupon!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

Headline: Appetizer cheese fondue is bland, bread is stale, Chinese fondue has still frozen beef brought to the table. Waiter who brings water to the tables is the highlight of the evening. Discount Coupon users are told Tax is on actual price they paid but many around us were told they MUST may TIP on FULL VALUE, and that is WRONG !
Story: Originally when food coupons, ie: Living social, Groupon, etc came out, it was a great way to try out a restaurant without spending a fortune, you generally got to try a variety of nicely prepared dishes that showed off the chef’s talents, now it seems that certain restaurants offer plates that are likely to be of an inferior value, made by a “cook” that is cutting corners and making it questionable to go back to that restaurant. They allege that you are buying a +100 dollar meal for $49 dollars, but that is deceptive.
Alpenhause now offers a variety of discount coupon programs, and our visit did give us a sample of a kitchen that has lost it’s way. Frozen beef sent to our table for the Chinese Fondue ? I hate trying to cook frozen slices of beef in a broth that cannot get hot as the meat is too cold and cools it down), stale bread and I mean STALE for the cheese fondue appetizer, and of course the piece the resistance in a Swiss restaurant: a bland fondue with not a hint of taste of any of the basic ingredients of a Cheese Fondue: Where was the slight touch of kirsch or maybe in a pinch some white wine, what about the grated nutmeg ( Maybe their nuts had dried up and died, leftovers from the 1976 Montreal Olympic games ? )
What about the fact there should have been maybe some Gruyere (or in a tight squeeze due to some robbery at all the local cheese shops ) some emmenthaler ? I could not tell, but the fondue teased me with it’s smooth look, but sadly it was a letdown, nada, and that combined with the stale bread served? I was actually insulted that a restaurant would consider this acceptable to send out of the kitchen.
Since you have paid with these discount coupons for your meal before entering, they have your money! So, Who needs to actually be proud if what is going out when you have already paid, let’s get the frozen food out, and staff can act like they want! The chocolate fondue to end the meal was OK, some nice fruit on the plate for each person. But, do little to late.
TECHNICAL PART OF PAYING THE BILL: The discount coupons say: the sales tax and TIP is not included. So TAX is paid on the DISCOUNT amount and the Coupon seller SUGGESTS you pay your TIP on the FULL VALUE ! Not you have to ! The waiter argued with two tables near us that the clients HAD to pay on the FULL Value ! So, remember to go there with cash and leave cash. Less hassles about the tip !When are you the clients going to wake-up and tell these lazy owners to pay a good wage to staff and not make us be the bad guys, if you do not give me good service there will be NO TIP. If you give me inferior food, I will pay on the value I paid for, not what you boost the prices to allegedly be.
Alpenhause ( like other restaurants in Montreal) writes on their menus that at a table of five (5) or more, the tip is added. Ever notice how when you are at a larger table with six friends or more, certain restaurants give you one overworked waiter!
Well, our table clearly had four (4) people at it, but the bill had the TIP added automatically ! You now have to argue with waiter to get it removed! And by the way, wait staff not available to offer a second cup of coffee is very tacky! But then again, you had already paid so we want to close !
