This was the first time my husband and I had been to the Jean-Talon Market. We spent an afternoon wandering around through the main building and also in the stores surrounding it.
There's a nice little chocolate store at the main (south) entrance with very tempting goodies - my husband picked up a little box of chocolate-dipped cookies there. I got some cheese at a small vendor in the main building.
We went to another store (forget the name of it!) which was across the street from the south entrance of the market building, where they had tastings of a sharp cheddar, and Dieu du Ciel beer. My husband is the beer drinker, not me - he loved the beer and bought some, and I loved the cheese and bought some.
There are tons of fruit and veggie stands in the main building, but also some outside surrounding the building - we got grapes and a lb of almonds at one of them. My jaw dropped at the prices - I'm used to paying Toronto prices for produce, and it was way cheaper at this market! Too bad we were 6 hours from home and staying in town for the next couple of days, or I'd have been tempted to stock up on groceries there...
A lovely place to walk around, lots of people lounging about outside, as well as a street performer. The streets surrounding the market are extremely narrow, and are basically pedestrian streets, although cars are allowed on them. We got a kick out of the fact that whenever a car tried to drive through one of those tiny streets (something I can't understand - why would anyone bother?), the pedestrians would just amble along right in front of them instead of making way. It would have been quicker for the drivers to walk through than the amount of time it took them to drive through!
So, my tip for tourists who want to check it out is - definitely go! But leave your car parked wherever you're staying and take the Metro there. (It's very easy to get to on the Metro - just get off at the Jean-Talon station.) You'll be a lot happier!
