“Great place in old Montreal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

Beautiful renovation of an old bank building (on the old "Wall Street" of Montreal). The L Hotel has a great central location but is quiet inside. The hotel owner has an impressive collection of pop art that is displayed around the hotel (but rather chaotically). Our first floor room was very roomy and had incredibly high ceilings (the old bank building thing I guess). The bathroom in our rooms seem to be a disconnect- small and didn't reflect the rest of the hotel finish-out. Great breakfast.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms may not have the very high ceilings found in our first floor room

Location: walking distance to Rue St.Paul (half pedestrianised street full of restaurants, cafes, shops and art galleries. Always buzzing and packed at the weekend!), Place St.Jacques, the Old Port...

Hotel: really unusual due to the art about the place - nice! The bar area was really nice too though we didn't stop for a drink there. The gym is very basic - 4 cardio machines, very light weights and 2 swiss balls. Towels and water provided but no mats to do floor exercises. We didn't have breakfast here (try Cafe Veritas for a healthy breky or Olive et Gourmande - both yummy and within walking distance) but the dining room was really cool (boutique style.)

Room: really big! Clean and airy. Large flatscreen TV and tea/coffee making facilities as well as everything you'd expect to get in the bathroom. (Nice Gilchrist and Soames toiletries!)

Service: staff were always smiling and friendly and keen to help you in any way they could. Check out was excellent - as we checked out early in the morning we settled the bill the night before. The woman who dealt with our bill had communicated this to her colleague so in the morning he knew that we'd already paid, our taxi was waiting for us and there was coffee if we wanted it - fantastic! You can also keep the keys as a souvenir - lovely stuff!

Montreal: we really enjoyed Parc Mont Royal as it was lush and totally away from the city. Beautiful views too. We didn't enjoy Parc Jean Drapeau - it wasn't really a park, more of an island with lots of roads, construction, litter...not relaxing or pretty. We used the Bixi bikes - really nice way to get around but you need to 'check them in' to a bike station every 30mins. OK I guess but if you go a minute over you get charged more so watch out as it gets more and more expensive the longer you have the bike! There are lots of stations around happily.

This was my first time in Montreal and my friend found this hotel. It's in a great location. Right in the heart of Old Montreal. You are just minutes away from the main square, the Old Port and the Metro. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. Maurice the bartender is awesome! The only reason I am giving this an average is that they don't have room service. Which is strange because in our hotel there was a menu book for room service. I called about 10:30 at night to see if we could order some soup, but the girl at the front desk said "We actually don't do room service."I said " But there is a menu book here (its the main book about the hotel)" and she just said um yeah we dont do it. I was totally baffled. What hotel doesnt have room service but has a menu book in the room? Then we thought well maybe they stop taking orders at a certain time, even though the girl never mentioned that. So once we got back to the states my friend called the hotel and asked and they said they don't do room service. So I really don't know what that was about. It's a super chic nice hotel. I figured that they would have room service but I guess not. Obviously if you are in Montreal the restuarant life and food there is awesome so room service isn't necessary but my friend had a sore throat and of course it's always nice if it's availble.

Dear Paigew31,

We are sorry to hear that your friend was not feeling well during your last stay with us and that you were not able to get room service late in the evening.

We don't have a menu book in our in-room directory and we don't have room service per say, but we do offer plates of cheeses, fruits, bread and pâtés. Although limited in choices, it is available for those who choose not to eat out, especially late in the evening.

We do hope that this experience will not deter you from staying with us next time to come to Montreal.

When we first walked into the lobby we were very impressed with the decor. Then our room...outstanding! High ceiling, very cool art work. The decorating is so gorgeous. The towels are the nicest I have ever used. And the sheets on the bed were also so high quality. This is now our favourite hotel in Montreal and we will always stay here.

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hotel.
First, the location is great. It is a few steps from the conference center and china town, and even closer to the heart of the old town which is to my opinion the best place to stay in Montreal (historic sights, great restaurants, live music, boutiques...). The Hotel itself is rather small but with a lot of charm. The staff was very helpful. The check in and out were very easy, they called taxis and restaurants for us and helped us choose the best places to go. The room was big and very comfortable, the bed especially. The bathroom was rather large as well with a jet tub which was nice after long days of walking or biking. We had wifi access in the room for free.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

I knew this place was going to be different as I walked past the pop culture art while The Go-Gos were playing over the hotel's speakers. Great vibe from the decor and staff. The staff was friendly and helpful (turning us on to the greatest poutine place in town: La Banquise!). The breakfast included is a great touch. The food was always fresh and plentiful. Take some time to walk through the lobby and halls and take in the original artwork (Warhol, Stella, Lichtenstein, etc.). The place is a museum! A few minutes walk from the Square-Victoria subway stop and a few minutes walk to Notre Dame and Old Montreal in the other direction. Great location. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for: a great stay. For runners: the hotel is less than 2 miles to Mt. Royal Park. Plenty of clean trails to run there.

Recently spent three nights in Old Montreal. Hotel was in great location. The staff was extremely helpful with everything we asked. Room was spacious and clean. Loved the pop art and signed movie posters in the interior. Staff even provided us with late-night menu from nearby pizzeria and called in the order for us. Would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Montreal!
