“The best hotel ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

OK, I've stayed in many hotels and I don't say this lightly, but by far this is the best hotel I've stayed at.

You must have read by now that the owner, Georges Marciano, is a big art collector and especially a fan of Andy Warhol. Arts (paintings, sculptures, etc.) are displayed throughout the hotel, it is like staying at a gallery -- although I am not a big fan of modern (or post-modern, whatever) arts, I certainly can't complain about the extra bonus of art exhibits.

The rooms are beautifully furnished with fine furniture and -- not surprisingly -- more paintings. The rooms also have very high ceilings, which makes them seem roomier (the rooms are not small, but the vertical space is nice to have). Everything -- from furniture to blankets to sheets and towels -- is of fine quality and gives you the luxurious feel. They certainly did not skimp on anything.

The hotel is located in old town and within walking distance to the famed Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. The staff is very friendly as well.

We have not used the swimming pool (not even sure if there is one) and did not dine there, so I am giving these an "Average" score (I wish Tripadvisor has an "N/A" option), but seriously this is a very nice hotel and I highly recommend it.

WE travel widely and enjoy the art featured by some hotels. But L Hotel is in a league by itself. It's a major, legitimate museum of modern art all around you -- on every floor, the lobby, the street level. The hotel itself is excellent -- terrific service, gorgeous rooms at fair prices. Lots of little things too -- like free bottled water (icy cold), free internet, excellent valet for your car.

But the secret to its magic is Georges Marciano's art collection -- world class by any standards. If I'm not mistaken Mr. Marciano -- who lives in the hotel and was quite congenial to all the guests -- co-founded GUESS and is worth a fortune (pending, it seems, payment of a huge lawsuit he lost, apparently the reason he is in Montreal and not LA. (If you like cars you'll see his Ferrari and two or three of his elegant Rols Royces on the street outside the hotel's front door).

So this amazing hotel had a large, original Jasper Johns painting outside my door and originals by Robert Indiana and Andy Warhol scattered about, plus others of the most famous American pop artists of the last half century.

The hotel is great on its own merits. Add to that the spacious rooms, excellent continental breakfast, service that wants every customer to be happy (we had a reservations glitch; they made it right ) -- this is a 5 star experience in a great location in Vieux Montreal.

Room Tip: Their web site shows different room styles. They have several Robert Indiana rooms all comparable a...

INTRO

Arrived into Montreal for the first time midnight during a short 3-day vacation with my girlfriend. Upon entering the fashionable lobby, we were immediately greeted by a warm and welcoming staff member who immediately offered to valet my car (even though I already parked it in a garage). Regardless, they found it anyway and re-parked it in a safer location.

The evening's stay was pleasant, the hallways are adorned with ORIGINAL outwork (ours had two Andy Warhol's just outside the elevator). The staff was pleasant, polite, and helpful.

Later that morning, I find out to my surprise that I had arrived at the wrong, but similar in name, hotel (the clerk that night had accidentally booked me as well without checking) and in my sleep-deprived drive from the States, I had entered the wrong GPS name!

Despite this, the hotel reduced my initial charge to the same rate as the hotel I was SUPPOSED to being staying at.
Happy with the service, I decided to simply extend my stay at the L Hotel.

I was not disappointed - the location is ideal for all travels within Montreal proper, the location is safe, the staff is superb, and the valet parking is outstanding (my car was always found ready for me just down the steps of the main entrance).

PROS
-Immaculate rooms, trendy lobby with great artwork, ideal location for travel
-Staff: always polite and quick to attend to your needs. Ex - a bucket of ice requested, arrived in 2 minutes. Extra soap and towels - 2 minutes. Unreal!!!
-Cleanliness: fantastic, even the house staff are polite and social.
-Location: well within walking distance for many of the tourist sites we wanted to see. Only minutes from the Cathedral and dtown restaurants

CONS
-The price is not for everyone. However, with this establishment, you get EXACTLY what you pay for. This hotel is well worth it! If you're looking for a safe, worry free stay in Montreal, this is the ideal location
-No pool (this is what tipped me off that something was amiss. The hotel I had booked originally had a pool, so imagine my confusion when I asked staff where the pool was and was told there was none!)
-Other than that, there are NO true CONS with this establishment

OVERALL
-This will now be my hotel of choice every time I travel to Montreal

As always, contact me if you further questions and of course, safe travels!!! :)

Room Tip: Book early!

Not much to say: excellent location, excellent room and excellent service. Price reasonable for the type of hotel, is like stay in a museum, extraordinary collection of original, modern art, they have a BOTERO just outside the entrance that it makes me proud to be Colombian,

Just two blocks away walking distance to the Notre- Dame Basilica, so glad we stayed in this fantastic HOTEL ..Thank you for your great service It is rare to find a hotel that is this customer-centered.

Stayed at the L Hotel on a recent business trip to Montreal. The staff was very nice and helpful and the art all over the hotel was really unique. My room was very comfortable, well appointed and quite large for a city hotel room. I liked the small bar at the hotel perfect for glass of wine before heading out to dinner. The breakfast was a bit expensive for a cold continental buffet but everything was very good. Compared to many of the other hotels I looked into this seems a great value for a hotel in Old Montreal particularly if you want something other than the chain experience.
