“Elegant and Grand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

Stayed one night. This is a grand hotel with 15 foot ceiling, marble halls, great large rooms. The lobby is an artwork and the library off of the lobby is right out of the times of the Great Gatsby. Service top notch, staff is helpful, professional. This is one of the finest hotels I have ever stayed at. Look out for their specials on-line. The restaurant in the hotel is another story. I don't think it is owned by the hotel. Service was great, the room is beautiful and so is the food. But as far as taste, not so good. Very complicated food. On one plate there were 5 different sauces with 5 different items (this was a 5 course tasting dinner for $100 each). I could not figure out which sauce to use with which item. Plating is a little over the top. Not a lot of food either. Left hungry. I am not the type of person who needs heaping plates of food. I own and operate a fine dining restaurant (not the chef) and if I presented this to my customers, well..... Skip the restaurant but do stay at the hotel.

Room Tip: Great online discounts last minute

We spent 6 nights at Le St James and it was one of the most wonderful experiences we've had. The hotel is located on the edge of Old Montreal so it is within easy walking distance of many restaurants, shops and the waterfront. The hotel itself is an unimposing structure with only 60 rooms, each one of which is unique. Once you walk in your impression immediately changes. The entryway is a combination of small but spacious while on the immediate right is a marvellous library room. We had coffee, played chess (they supplied the board) and accessed wi-fi while in a genteel surrounding with an extensive collection of books both in French and English. Our first two nights were on the 11th floor where we had a well-equipped but not particularly spacious room with a queen size bed. The bathroom was medium size with a superb shower. As tall people we had requested a kingsize bed but through an administrative error were not given the correct room/bed. Once a kingsize bed/room was available they moved us to the 10th floor. This room was larger and had an even more spectacular shower (6 different shower heads including directly overhead that could be used in any combination desired). I don't believe any of the rooms have views of note.

What we found most impressive was the willingness and dedication of every staffmember to do everything possible to make our stay pleasant. As regular guests at Ritz Carlton properties we're used to the highest levels of service. Le St. James went one step beyond. Perhaps it was the smallness that made it more personal.

Breakfast in the lounge/bar/dining room was a delight. The menu was varied and over our stay we tried many different choices: all excellent. While we never had lunch or dinner at the Hotel we had drinks/wine in the early and late evenings. The intimate setting was relaxing. The wine list is good but not extensive.

The gym (in the basement along with the spa) is very small with two treadmills and two stationary bikes with a limited amount of free weights. If you want to do anything but basic cardio work you'll be disappointed.

We've stayed in a number of hotels where the physical room/appointments were superior to Le St James but only a couple where the overall experience matched it. If you're looking for highly personal service in an intimate setting you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I stayed three nights at Le St James Hotel. It was a perfect location to Old Montreal and the Notre Dame Basillica. We booked our stay through Tavelocity and got a 10% off coupon code. Originally w didn't consider the St James, but with a discount on the room it became very affordable.

The rooms were beautiful and well maintained. The bathroom was very large with marble floors and tub. They provide internet access in the library, which we continued to use in our room.
We didn't eat at XO Restaurant, but had drinks at the bar. The bartender was very pleasant and made a great chocolate martini.

The bed was comfortable and the room had excellent AC (90 degrees outside). Ate breakfast at Eggspectation, one block up the street, and next door at the Intercontinental Hotel.

Highly recommend and will return

Hotel Le St-James is a beautiful hotel situated in an ideal location
in the old part of town. The staff is caring and the concierge
excellent. While our four-night stay would have left a most
pleasurable memory, we encountered several recurring problems in the
hotel's dining room, XO Restaurant. Continental Breakfast was
included in our room rate, and regardless of whether or not a
Continental Breakfast was ordered, we were assured at check-in a
credit of its value to be applied to the check. Strangely, however,
we were billed for the Continental Breakfast, in addition, to juice,
tea and cereal, even though we did not order the Continental
Breakfast. Our breakfast, therefore, wound up being a cost. Another
couple who sat next to us encountered the same problem. Despite
having raised the issue with the general manager and the front desk,
the problem reoccurred each morning. It baffles us why Hotel Le
St-James would want to bill in this manner and leave guests with a
feeling of being overcharged when Hotel Le St-James could offer guests
a truly memorable experience and encourage repeat visits. If visiting
Montreal, I recommend choosing a different hotel, like Hotel Place
D'Armes.

This is a lovely small hotel near the Old town in Montreal. It is a charming old hotel, but the best feature is the service provided by their front desk staff, the concierge desk and spa. Ask Eddie at the concierge desk for advice on an Asian restuarant!

Room Tip: Avoid the side with the office building - too many office workers nearby

Quite possibly, the finest hotel stay of my life. Room was beautiful. Location nicely situated between Vieux Montreal and the center of the city. Staff were professional yet friendly and accessible. Even has a Bixi Bikes kiosk across the street, enabling my wife and me to work off the calories from those wonderful Montreal restaurant recommendations made by the hotel concierge.

Everything about the hotel was perfect, the rooms were amazing(as a family we had 3, 301, 1002, 1006)service was fantastic, restaurant was fantastic, bathrooms were new and very clean. Only complaint was that U2 was staying in the hotel when we were and their security was a little over board and the $20 a day for internet was ridiculous for the price of the room.
