It should be said that at least 75% of restaurants in this part of town (Mile End) are terrific, so expectations were high for this '' ironic hole in the wall'' i.e. really trendy with cutting edge recipes and attractive staff /decor, but low key.
Excellent wine selection, with an ambiance best suited to the hip 20s-30s crowd, be it for a date night (kind of noisy) or with friends.
The food and service were excellent. Our delightful waitress Michelle was pleasant, knowledgeable and attentive. We shared two starter plates, one being a flavorful dipping bread with intricate seasonings, and the other being a turnip salad with exotic and delicious ingredients. Both of these were excellent and modestly priced (8-10$ each)
Most importantly, the pizza was phenomenal. Large enough for two (we still couldn't finish it after our starters) and quite frankly very reminiscent of what's available in Rome or Naples. The kitchen seemed to have gone out of their way for their ingredients, which were fresh and well-matched. If you love crusts like I do, you'll be happy to know this was the most authentically Italian aspect of our delicious, thoughtfully crafted pizza. (16$ / big enough for 2)
I will definitely go back. If you're visiting or live in the area, you shouldn't miss it either. My only gripe is it's not open for lunch. Too bad.
