A South American family moved into my neighbourhood a few years ago and have opened my eyes to all the good things from Bolivia and Peru. When they recently offered to take me to an authentic Peruvian restaurant, I jumped at the opportunity.
The menu at Pat’e Palo includes Peruvian and South American dishes but also has some popular international foods. The menu is extensive and took me ten minutes just to read through everything. There were so many choices that I could not decide what to order. I knew that I had to have something Peruvian, so I asked my South American friend to pick for me.
When my entrée arrived, I discovered that she had ordered a type of seafood soup called Parihuela. This a broth of spicy tomato with loads of seafood including huge shrimp, mussels, crab, octopus, baby squid and a huge piece of yucca. With the complimentary fried corn and plantain chips, the Parihuela would have been the perfect meal in itself. That was not to be because soon after I had finished the soup, my main meal arrived.
Cecilia had ordered me the Cebiche mixto, which was several types of lime marinated fish. It came with sides of sweet potato, yucca and a South American corn. It was absolutely wonderful but after the huge soup entrée, I could not eat much, so I asked the waiter to wrap it up for my next day’s lunch.
As I mentioned before, the menu at Pat’e Palo is huge. I had a chance to sample some of what my friends had ordered including shrimp fried rice and jumbo shrimps. All were excellent.
The staff at the restaurant could not have been better. All were extremely friendly and fluent in Spanish, English and French. The restaurant itself is cozy and clean, tastefully decorated in a nautical theme with photos of buccaneers, fishing nets and models of old world tall ships. All this makes sense because I was told the loosely translated meaning of the name “Pat’e Palo” means a peg legged buccaneer.
Keeping up with the theme of the place, our check arrived in a small pirate’s chest. To top off the great evening, we were all given a complimentary glass of excellent but sweet Spanish Porto.
Being my first visit to a Peruvian restaurant, I can not compare Pat’e Palo to any other but I must say that my evening was very nice. Thanks to my South American friends for continuing to expand my world.
