“So Close to an Excellent Rating...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

Our group consisted of two couples. We arrived at the Marriott Chateau Champlain around 10 AM. We didn't request an early check-in, so we were pleasantly surprised when both of our rooms were ready. The front desk representative was extremely polite and helpful. She met our request for a high floor, and spoke in both English and French.

The rooms were spacious, and absolutely beautiful! They definitely exceeded our expectations, and were definitely a cut above the average Marriott property. The only downside was that the bathrooms were quite small, but still fine. The rooms included a small bar area, a large closet, and a refrigerator. They had standard alarm clocks, but no iPod docks. The views were stunning, and we loved the half-moon windows!

Overall, we were very impressed with the staff at the Chateau Champlain. The doormen were excellent and never hesitated to offer assistance. The housekeeping staff were always very friendly. We spoke to the concierges on several occasions and they always had great recommendations for places to go or things to do. On our first day, the concierge recommended we go to Creperie Suzette in Old Montreal for breakfast, and it was absolutely fantastic!

We took advantage of some of the amenities offered by this hotel. The pool had a ceiling that was partially constructed with glass, which allowed a great deal of natural light in and made for a pleasantly warm swim. However, the hot tub was exceedingly hot and overall, the pool area was in need of renovation.

The location of the hotel was great. It was minutes from St. Catherine Street. There are many restaurants and bars nearby. It is also located very close to the VIA Rail train station. Our favorite aspect of this hotel was that a metro (subway) station was attached to the building. This was very convenient as we used the subway several times each day during our stay.

The only aspect of our stay that prevented this hotel from garnering an excellent rating (in our books anyway) was the inexcusable breakfast we were served on our last day. For nearly $25, we received two undercooked eggs that looked not a thing like any other eggs I've seen in my entire life, a couple strips of bacon, three mini hashbrown patties, a bagel, and a pittance of fruit (ie one grape and a watermelon triangle). We expect to pay a premium for a hotel breakfast, but the portion was deplorable. My boyfriend and I split the breakfast, expecting the usually large portion that is provided by a hotel breakfast. My boyfriend, who regularly frequents hotels, mistakenly believed that the plate that was handed to him was just his half. Nope!

We should also mention that we booked this hotel through a third-party website and were treated as well as any other guest!

Overall, our stay at the Marriott Chateau Champlain was lovely. We recommend that the hotel improve the quality and size of their breakfast options to improve the stay of future travelers. Nevertheless, we would definitely stay again!

This hotel is a must for those discerning customers who like pampering. It is an old world hotel from the moment you walk through the lobby. It's beautiful furnishings are very inviting to lounge and people watch while waiting for your other half. It is pricey if you are going into the bar for a martini - $15.00, but hey one drink won't kill the bank. The view from our room was magnificent. At night we could watch all the lights from our chairs by the unusual window that's so large you have a full view of the city. Where our room was we could see the church beside us. It had a dome and surrounding the roof were the 12 aposostles each holding significance to the old biblical world. If you can afford it, opt for the upper floors that have a special concierge area. There you can have your breakfast, coffee throughout the day, afternoon appetizers and evening sweets, all included in your room rate. Make sure to ask about it before you book. Also don't forget your swimsuit. There is a lovely indoor pool. Location is good for your everyday jaunts. Cabs await at the door always. Parking is $22.00 per day but that gives you concierge parking. If you want to park yourself it's $18.00 per day. There is an awful lot of city construction so make sure you bring your wits about you when driving in this city. It's crazy out there.

Room Tip: Higher floors (make sure you enquire before booking), include concierge breakfast etc. See my comme...

From the moment we entered the lobby, we were charmed, both by the ambience and the staff. Our room was lovely, comfortable and had an amazing view of Montreal. The concierge desk was friendly and helpful and doorman Robby(?) should have his own sit-com, alovely experience in an amazing city.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of th park.

I stayed here in May 2012 and have stayed here in the past as well. Its a good hotel located in downtown Montreal and conveniently located. I guess that is the best thing I like about this hotel as it gets easy for new visitors to find their way about and back.

It is connected to the Montreal underground city which makes it really convenient especially in the winters. The buffet breakfast at the hotel is quite decent with a good spread. The rooms are also well maintained and comfortable.

For tourists its a good bet as it is quite close to the Central station, Peel street (from where the Gray line - Coach Canada tours begin), St. Catherine is also at a walking distance of 10 mins.

All in all a good value for money hotel!

Room Tip: Most rooms have the city view

We stayed for a weekend during the Jazz Festival and Canada Day. The hotel is comfortable, but certain aspects could use some updating. The rooms were average sized and included most amenities that you might expect from a Marriott. The bedding was comfortable. The staff was pleasant and friendly. I thought the bellmen were a bit inept, but they may have been understaffed with the Canada Day and Jazzfest crowd staying at the hotel. The breakfast buffet was better than I had expected.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the park and city are outstanding.

I spent almost a week at the Chateau Champlain white attending a trade show in Montreal. The staff was courteous and helpful. Regardless of the time I left the room in the morning, including a couple of days when I left just before noon, the room was always spotless upon my return with the mini-bar stocked, fresh towels, and beds crisply made. I find that in a lot of hotels the room always looks "crisp" when you check in but generally doesn't seem to get the same attention - this wasn't the case here.

The staff at the hotel bar was exceptionally pleasant and welcoming. Unfortunately, the food wasn't as good as I had hoped for - still some of the appetizers on the menu were quite good including the duck confit and we enjoyed them with drinks before going out to eat.

The concierge was also very helpful, calling and getting us last minute reservations at a couple of restaurants.

Room Tip: Some of the people in our group had river side rooms and some had city side rooms. I much preferred...

We stayed at the hotel for two nights. The staff were very friendly. The room were nice with view of city. The bed was relatively comfortable. Stores and coffee shop downstairs. Close to main shopping and restaurants. I will stay there again.
