“Nice location, cozy but sweet little room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2010

We chose the Auberge de la Fontaine blindly based on location: we wanted to avoid staying in the very touristy Vieux-Montreal and thought that La Plateau sounded like a good fit for us. I

t turned out to be be quite nice; there is the pleasant Park de la Fontaine across the street and an active bike path right in front of the hotel. We could easily walk to St. Denis street, Mont Royal and Avenue Duluth. There are cute bistros near by and a charming feel over all in the area. The breakfast buffet is pretty generous, though the coffee could be better (I found myself just buying a cup to go at the Café de la Maison des cyclistes a block away). There is a little kitchen which stays open warm drinks and small snacks. It came in handy for us when we needed a cup of tea after being caught in a rainstorm and also when we were looking for champagne glasses.

Our room overlooked the Park de la Fontaine and, though small, was homey and sweet with exposed brick, modern art and a nice feeling. I slept very well, which is always a blessing.

The hotel was about a 15 dollar cab ride to the Gare Centrale train station. Once there, we walked, biked (there is a Bixi rental bike stand in the park across the street) and rode the Metro to get around the city. I do wish there were a closer Metro stop the the hotel (the nearest is Mont Royal, about a 10-12 minute walk). Still, I would stay here again for sure.

The staff at the Auberge were excellent - friendly and very helpful. The room was amazing - colorful, clean, large, comfy, big bathroom and nice view of Parc de la Fontaine. The breakfast was AWESOME!!! Sooo delicious and lots to choose from, and they also let you snack from the fridge (which is leftovers from breakfast.. woo hoo!)

Every year we celebrate our anniversary with a trip, and almost always a different place each time. This is the only hotel to which we have returned for a second anniversary trip visit and it is likely we will return for a third.
We are huge fans of Montreal and the Auberge is one of its highlights. Its location across from Parc Fontaine in the Plateau is an oasis. We are cyclists, and the bicycle lanes that pass by the front door are the icing on the cake. St. Dennis Street is also nearby with its exceptional shopping and beckoning sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
The building and rooms are charming, the breakfast a pleasure and the staff very friendly and helpful. Old Montreal is a relatively short bicycle ride away.
On this trip we stayed in the suite with a private terrace that overlooks terrace. The room is large, comfortable and airy. The terrace great for a leisurely breakfast and relaxing evenings watching life in this vibrant part of Montreal unfold.

We've been for a wekend in Auberge LaFontaine in Montreal. here are our comments about this place.
The good side:
Good location, 20 minutes walk from a metro station, lots of restaurants at walking distance, Parc LaFontaine across the street, very nice to walk in by day. The breakfasts are good, the breakfast room very welcoming, the people at the front desk very helpful and kind. The price is good for what you get.

The "constructive comments"
Our room was a "regular" one, so the smallest rooms the hotel offers. It is quite small with only a double bed wich is sleepable at best, pillows are barely ok. Our window was right at the street level, we absolutely had to close the curtains for a minimal intimacy, so the room was always dark; in fact, even with the curtains open it didn't had a luminous feel at all. Otherwise the bathroom is functionnal, very clean, not the modern kind but ok. There are few parkings but plenty easy parking in the streets nearby.

Think we'll try another bed and breakfast in our next visit to Montreal.

We previously stayed at Auberge de La Fontaine three or four years ago while on an Elderhostel bicycle tour (Montreal is great for bicycling), and found it to be charming.

So when we returned to Montreal on our own, we immediately chose this same charming facility.

The location is perfect for bicyclists, with a segregated bike path passing in front of the hotel and a large and beautiful Parc La Fontaine, with numerous bicycle paths, right across the street.

Also, there are 15-20 restaurants of all cuisines within walking distance.

The service is gracious. The breakfasts are exquisite. The rooms are beautifully appointed.

A word of warning: this is an old mansion, with rooms on three stories and no elevator. If you are not vigorous and healthy, ask for a first level room.

Parking is very limited, with the Auberge having only three spots in the alley behind the building. However, there is free parking on the side streets nearby, although one has to move one's car every second or third day. The staff is very solicitous of their guests and go out of their way to help us avoid parking tickets.

The kitchen is available to guests day and night, with cookies, tea, coffee, a refrigerator/freezer, and croissants available at no charge.

The prices for rooms in Old Town were so expensive that we opted to stay at Auberge de la Fontaine in another part of town which turned out to be a real blessing. The extensive bike bath went right past the auberge, we could easily walk to St. Denis for tourist shopping and restaurants, or we could just walk a block or two for an excellent French dinner in a locals' restaurant. Parking is free and safe, and the breakfast buffet more than filled us up every morning. Our room overlooked the Park de la Fontaine and was huge and wonderfuly furnished. There is nothing second rate about this auberge. We very much liked the kitchen being open and stocked so that we could return at the end of a day for tea and a cookie. This location is much more relaxed than Old Town and much more French since this is a francophile neighborhood where they start with French before moving into English, unlike Old Town. We didn't find driving to town for museums and performances to be a problem or an expense since parking was readily available downtown and very reasonable.

The only place we return to time and time again, the Auberge is perfect, a casual and charming small hotel with unique and delightful rooms. With the park immediately across the street, a quiet street in a charming and lively neighborhood, delicious breakfasts in the morning, kitchen access for a quick snack. This delightful inn IS Montreal.
