“Excellent value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

We spent five nights here having booked through an internet agency. Our room was as described - king sized bed - and our request for a quiet room was met. Our bed was comfortable; the room clean and we were very pleased with our stay. The in-room iron and ironing board were very useful, and the refrigerator meant that we were able to organise our own breakfasts for the days when we had early pickups for guided tours before the hotel's restaurant opened.

We enjoyed an evening meal at the restaurant and also a breakfast, and found the hotel's gift shop useful and not overpriced for cards and a couple of souvenir presents.

The receptionists were charming and very helpful, and made our stay enjoyable.

The hotel is very conveniently situated for the 747 airport bus, the bus station for Greyhound services and is only one block from the metro system. Plenty of restaurants and shops nearby - the Presse Café on the rue St Catherine is particularly recommended for early breakfasts and late snacks - and easy and safe to walk into Old Montreal and the CBD.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room.

The Grand Dame de Montreal it is not, however, it is very well located between Old Montreal and the Latin Quarter. It's hard to think of a better location, really. I stayed with a buddy there last Fall and we both found it to be very cheap and it had what we needed. We certainly didn't go to MTL to sit in a dim hotel room. It's a good place for a group of guys to stay as it is simple, cheap and very well positioned near bars and where students hang out. One word of caution....do NOT park in the outdoor parking lot next to it! This is a private lot not owned by the Berri and the guys who run it are just scumbags who will just try to have your car towed by their cousin or something haha. We wised up and parked nearby at the Bibliotheque (library) which was cheaper, safer and an all-round superior place to park.

We stayed here while my husband performed at the Nuit D'Afrique festival. Great location because it's walking distance to a lot of downtown attractions, or a quick bus or bike trip. Plenty of places to eat nearby, and even a small grocery store if you want to get a few things for an outdoor picnic in the lawn that's right around the corner. The rooms and bathroom were definitely clean, just very dated. I didn't really interact with any staff, but they seemed pleasant from what I did see and very accommodating. Many of the artists for the festival were staying there, so it was quite busy while we were there. I'd probably stay here again, just because it's a really good an easily accessible location.

It is a hotel that is location wise one of the best where it is real close to old downtown and other areas - it has a restaurant that has good food (no free breakfast) - we got a suite and the rooms were old and the TVs are still old etc. - parking - was told to park at the parking outside however there was parking below the hotel that they don't tell you about (your room key works to enter the garage below the hotel!). charge you $20 for it and not sure why they don't tell you it is there for you to park.

Good bus connection from/to the airport
Staff at the reception is quite friendly and helpful.
The room size is ok. I have to admit that the rooms are very clean and even the cleaning staff is very friendly.
But the interior is dated! It is simple and just looks old-fashioned. Quite basic and a flat-screen doesn't make it a lot more modern. Mattresses are quite old and simple. Also the bathroom is very basic and old.
I guess it is time for a reno!

Just spent the last two nights, our second stay, and am more than satisfied. Clean, comfortable, quiet room, with a short walk to jazz festival, and Old Montreal. With the Metro on the corner the Lord Berri is a good choice. We will be back.

When we go to Montreal we usually stay at the Hotel Lord Berri, right beside the University of Quebec. Ask for one of the renovated rooms on the upper floors and you will do well for the money. There is an excellent, really excellent Italian restaurant that serves wonderful dinners on the main floor. Call the hotel and arrange for parking before you come so you don't get stressed out about it. Not a fancy place, but good solid quality for the price. Close to UQUAM, Rue St. Denis, Old Montreal, Place des Arts, the bus station, and China Town. Once, we had to fly to Vancouver on short notice and the Lord Berri let us park in the basement for nearly 2 weeks for $200, in the dead of winter. It was a godsend. We never will forget the kindness shown to us at that time.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the renovated rooms on an upper floor.
