“Masquerading as a Marriott”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

I'm astounded by the very positive reviews and awards this hotel got. We usually stay at Marriotts for business purposes, we've been to quite a few of them in the US and this one was... awful. I had to check to be sure it really was a Marriott because it looked more like some rock bottom cut rate budget motel.

It was dirty, dated, sagging mattresses, awful kitchen closet, tiny bathroom but HUGE closet. The free breakfast was absolutely inedible. This was not my usual Marriott experience and I can only hope we never have to come back. Yes, it's close to McGill...but that is about it, it has nothing else to recommend it.

If you have allergies to anything - beware the overpowering chemicals/air freshener used here - it's enough to knock you out and make your eyes water. And gave me a headache after a while.

They were willing to find us a better room - but we were tired from traveling and needed to get work before morning and so declined.

In fact, why wouldn't they give us a good room to begin with? We have some kind of loyalty card with them, gold or elite membership. I would have thought they'd give us a 'better' room as a matter of course. I guess membership isn't what it used to be.

Room Tip: Find another hotel or bring a sleeping bag and sleep in the closet.

Thank you for taking the time to write a comment for our hotel. We rarely use scented air freshners in the room and when we do it is an odor neutralizer instead of an air freshener. I am sorry that the product gave you a reaction; we will contact the company regarding this event. We are also sorry that the relative age of the hotel gave you the impression that it was dirty. We can assure you that our staff takes the utmost pride in keeping this hotel clean as a whistle, as many review mentioned on this website. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the major renovations that the hotel will be undergoing in the near future. We intend on updating the look of the hotel and addressing the issues that you mentioned such as the size of the bathrooms and the closets. We will also be improving the public areas for our guests, like the lobby, the breakfast room, and the outside of the building.

Three of us stayed a long weekend to see Montreal. This location is great for proximity to
McGill and is right near the Peel Metro stop. The suites are small and bathroom is tiny, as is
the "kitchenette." The location is downtown, and not charming.
Now that I have seen Montreal, I would opt for a different location especially if your purpose is
leisure.
One sticking point for us was that the windows had no draperies to block the summer sunlight.
We all had trouble sleeping. Perhaps management could install room darkening shades.
Service here is excellent. The staff goes out of their way to be helpful, housekeeping was especially good.

Thank you for your comment. We would like to inform you of our upcoming renovations. During these renovations, we intend on addressing the issues that you mentioned such as the size of the bathrooms as well as the layout of the kitchens. As for the drapes to block out the light, sometimes they hide behind the decorative drapes, which explain maybe why you did not see them. If there is ever an issue in the future, please contact the front desk directly and they will be more than happy to assist you. We hope to see you during a future stay.

It is all about convenience.

Location - It's within 5 minutes to the metro, within 10 minutes to the museums, churches, squares, Mount Royal. I woke up at 7am to do a morning jog around downtown and I hit all the major sites under an hour, starting and ending at the hotel.

Wifi - included in rate. Gotta love it.

Breakfast - included in rate. Not amazing, but not bad either. Your basic continental fare. They have a waffle maker. Fake eggs, salt on the outside, sweet on the inside sausages, pancakes, canned fruit, etc.

Bathrooms - small. Small sinks, small tub, small everything.

Air conditioning/heating - Has two separate equipments for AC and heating. it has one of those older air conditioners where half of it sticks out from the window. It was heavy rainfall and I literally heard every drop of rain that was hitting the AC which was really annoying. Had to plug in my iPod to fall asleep again.

Minus the small inconveniences, no real issue and will def stay again!

Thank you for taking the time to write a comment for our hotel. You are correct in addressing our location, we are proud to be so close to various attractions in Montreal. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you of our upcoming renovations. We are looking to address both the bathroom and the air conditioning system in each room. Since it will be a major renovation, we intend on increasing the size of the bathrooms to be more comfortable. Also, the air conditioning system will no longer be in the window but inside the room where it will no longer cause any unwanted noise. We look forward to welcoming you in the future to enjoy our new hotel.

I think the best thing about residence inn is its location. Bang on the peel street and 2 mins walk from the metro makes it a very prime locality to stay in.

As far as hotel itself is concerned it was alright and at a decent price point too. Rooms were quite well furnished with complete kitchen etc.

The only downside i felt was breakfast which was monotonous and repetitive. However, their evening snacks (which are only a few times a week) are better.

Thank you for your comment. As you mentioned in your review, we are very well located in the heart of the city. Yes, we are 2 minutes away from the metro system but we are also walking distance from various shopping areas, restaurants, and museums. We try to put as many options as possible in our breakfast buffet and follow the strict Marriott standards with the hot and cold options available. We cannot offer what a traditional breakfast restaurant will offer but we try hard to offer the best buffet breakfast possible. Suggestions to make the selection better are always welcome! We hope to welcome you again for a future stay.

Everything is quite fine with this hotel, even to the smallest details. From the breakfast buffet to the very comfy and nicely appointed room. Only remark: the hotel is about 6 six blocks away from the nearest commercial area, and you would prefer to drive or take a cab rather than walk. Is not a long distance, just it is not inviting.

Thank you for your comment. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with Marriott Residence Inn. However, I believe you may have stayed at a sister hotel because we are located in the heart of downtown where the underground shopping and the subway system is only half a block away. We are also surrounded by various restaurants, museums and the business district, which are all walking distance from us. Both hotels offer the same services such as the complementary hot and cold breakfast buffet and spacious rooms equipped with kitchens and living areas. We hope to welcome you on a future trip to Montreal to take advantage of our convenient location.

As expected the Marriott is good. Large room with kitchenette, the price is a little on the higher end but it is in downtown Montreal... close to the metro station, great breakfast (included). The people in the reception were very willing to help us find our way around and made good sightseeing suggestions for us. Parking is offstreet.

Thank for your comment. We pride ourselves with many of the aspects that you mentioned in your review. Our location is very convenient since it is in the heart of Montreal, close to various attractions and public transportation. We also enjoy building relationships with our guests, which helps us offer exceptional service to everyone so that they can take full advantage of their stay in Montreal. The parking garage next to the hotel is currently undergoing renovations, but when these renovations are completed, the situation will be much more practical. We hope to welcome you again in the future.

Best thing about this hotel is the location right in downtown Montreal- can literally walk right up Peel Street up Mont-Royal (if you are in good health and like a climb) if not stay on flat surfaces 0f city streets around the corner from world famous McGill University (and much more expensive Ritz Carleton) etc. Nice roof top view from Hotel rooms average Residence Inn with kitchen and living room area- buffet breakfast also average- being owned and operated by Marriott- clean, well maintained etc.

Room Tip: High Floor otherwise just looking at side of buildings

Thank you for your comment. And you are correct to mention our location. We are situated in the heart of downtown, walking distance to shopping areas, restaurants, and various museums. The subway system is around the corner to access other areas of Montreal. As you mentioned, as a Residence Inn, our rooms have kitchens and living areas. Our hotel will be undergoing renovations later this year and we intend on improving these aspects as well as the public areas of the hotel. We hope to see you again on a future stay.
