Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

“Great way to spend an afternoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

I live in Montreal and I had never been to this museum. My history major arts student niece from
Toronto chose it as our afternoon outing. The permanent exhibit is free. Other temporary exhibits have an entry fee. There are some very interesting exhibits. Take the time to read the info or take an audio guide. There were a few guided groups and a few art students sketching. The museum is not well laid out and there are no directional arrows on the floor so you will need to have a sense of direction to figure out what you have seen and what you have not.the museum is in multiple buildings that are connected underground. Only open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

“Free Picasso and Degas viewings!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

I was so excited to find that this museum is free and has fantastic art in it. We saw works by Modigliani, Picasso, Degas, Matisse, Dali, Group of Seven, Emily Carr... All for free! If you're an art lover like me you need two days for this place (as you can't go all day, but maybe 2 hours each day?). I wouldn't miss this!

“Great if you know how to navigate it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

Some reviews say that there was so much nooks and crannies that the got lost and saw only part of the free permanent collection.
Others say that there is very little to see since they don't know on how it work. So take time to have everything explained to you , the member counter is not really busy so the employee on duty might have more time to tell you than those at the main desk that sell special exhibits tickets.
The European art Old Masters collection doesn't have so many big names or well known paintings but the way the painting is really great and there are a lot of explenatory panels + free audioguides that plays musics related to some of the paintings.
The impressionist and modern master section right on the main floor is small and not so interesting except for a stunning Monet on loan and I do hate the big and sexually obvious Picasso but it was a givt of his widow with very stringent conditions, the main one being that the painting must be shown at all time.
Make a stop at the children section, there is a part designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, huge comic style murals by Montréal street artists and one wall made up of stuffed toys. Just great fun.
