Owner description: Founded in 1860 as the Art Association of Montreal by a group of Montreal art collectors and patrons, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) was one of the first museums in North America to build up an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. It now numbers over 41,000 works from Antiquity to today, making it unique in Canada. It comprises paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, photographs and decorative art objects displayed in four pavilions: the Jean-Noel Desmarais Pavilion (international art), the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion (world cultures), the Liliane and David M. Stewart Pavilion (decorative arts and design) and the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion (Quebec and Canadian art). The latter, which was inaugurated in September 2011, includes a 444-seat concert hall - Bourgie Hall - featuring an important group of Tiffany stained glass windows. A fifth wing, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace devoted to international art and education, will open in late 2016 to launch Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations.

“Entertaining way to spend an afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Entertaining and free (as long as you don't choose to get entry into the visiting exhibits). Plan to spend 2-3 hours here.

Don't forget to go to the lower level to see the "stuffed animal" wall display.

“Fine arts museum fails to live up to its potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

We visited the MMFA in January, to see the Impressionist exhibition. The private collection is amazing! Its display in Montreal left much to be desired:
- long waits of 2 + hours (no timed entry);
- a verbose audio guide which takes forever!
- indifferent security staff are not very helpful.
The MMFA has a good permanent collection of impressionists paintings! No long line-ups so check it out!

“Great collections !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

I like :
Outside: the architecture and the numerous beautiful sculptures scattered on the grounds.
Inside: its magnificent permanent collections. The Museum also presents temporary collections that are always interesting like the recent "Impressionists" and the one on Peruvian arts that will start shortly.

“Impressionist exhibit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Have been to this museum a half a dozen times and have never been disappointed. This weekend was the close of a special Clark exhibit of impressinist painting so the place was mobbed, but I do not find that to be normally true.
