The Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Montreal is a strong offering from the Hilton family, which is now down to two properties in this area (with the Embassy Suites closer to the tourist area of Old Montreal). There is a lot to like about this property, and very little - if anything - to dislike
What I liked: This is still a relatively new hotel so everything is well maintained and in working order. Staff is very friendly and you will get a "standard" Hilton Garden Inn room - nice size, reasonable layout, "modern" bathroom, reliable wifi and so on. Given the location, some rooms will offer nice views of Mount Royal. The "made-to-order" breakfast (complimentary for Gold/Diamond) is one notch above what I have seen at other HGI properties with staff taking your order at the table (rather than you having to go to the "kitchen" area). Pastries and other buffet items were also above average in terms of taste and quality. The hotel has a nice (indoor) pool area on the top floor. Security I taken very seriously as you need your key to access any floors. Room was prepared as requested (hypoallergenic)
What to watch for / could be improved: There is a decent and modern gym on the top floor but I have found the Precor equipment to be one notch below the Precor equipment offered at other HGI and Hilton properties. I am also not a big fan of the bed at most of the Hilton Garden Inn. Firmness can be adjusted but the bed is rather uncomfortable. Given its location (close to McGill University) this hotel is often at or close to capacity so I find the nightly rate rather expensive for a Hilton Garden Inn property - and for Diamond this means that you will rarely get any sorts of upgrades.
The X Factor: Location: Being on Sherbrooke street and next to McGill, this hotel is adjacent to a former hotel that has been converted into student lodging. This is a very safe area, but it does bring an interesting crowd. Also Sherbrooke is at the north end of the core downtown area so it is a short walk (at least 10 minutes) to the more business area of Place Ville-Marie and its surroundings (which can be done mostly indoor)
All in, this is highly recommended if you can get it at the right price.
For Hilton Honnors members (Gold or Diamond), I have found that upgrades are a bit easier to get at the Embassy Suites and you pretty much get the same on-property benefits anyway so I would have a slight bias toward the Embassy if the price is the same
