“You will never find another place like Cosmos”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

Whenever I bring someone to Cosmos who has never been there before, I warn them, "this place is a literally a hole in the wall, expect to be shocked, and have the best breakfast EVER!". Cosmos is like no other place, it's a small counter, with less than 10 seats. Weather permitting there are tables outside. I took a co worker today. We walked in to a packed sit down counter, and several guests sitting outside. Nick was on the grill today,(Nick and his sister Nicky alternate days) As we walked in to this greasy spoon, Nick shouted out I AM THE BEST, which he is! Everything is made fresh right in front of you, nothing is pre cooked, re heated or microwaved, (they don't have one). We watched Nick, make the hash browns like a artist. He took freshly boiled potatoes, skin on, and pressed them against the grill, and mixed onions, margarine and some kosher/sea salt and pepper and constantly flip them wit a paint scraper! Next right in front of us he put down all beef salami and made our eggs exactly as we asked for them. Things sometimes can get very loud, in several languages at once and everyone can become a server by default. They are famous for their mish mash, creation sandwiches, and their good morning burgers. Cosmos is a Montreal institution, one of the very true old School greasy spoons.

“A taste of Montreal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

If you´re looking for a 5 star culinary experience this is probably not for you, but if your looking for the best all day breakfast and bagels in Montreal, served by two of the most eccentric and friendly ladies you´ll ever meet, then you can´t afford to miss Cosmos. Very tiny, always busy and perenially entertaining. The food includes about any fried combination you can come up with but, if you feeling hungry and/or brave, try the "mish-mash" - basically a mixture of anything on the grill at the time mixed with egg and served with the best hash browns you´ll ever taste and whatever toast you would like (try the black Russian bread). Coffee is good with refills and the whole thing is so cheap it´s practically free.

“The NDG Breakfast Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

It's hard to give this Montreal institution a 5 rating but for its type of establishment it certainly deserves one.
This restaurant boast an expansive seating of ten cracked faux-leather stools surrounding a small bar-like table inside and a couple of garden tables outside during the summer. So if you're coming to eat in Autumn or Winter during the weekend, make sure to bundle up because you're bound to wait a little outside.
Most patrons understand this so customers finish their food (no rush) and vacate for the people waiting (I always appreciate the camaraderie here).
Cosmos claim to fame is first class greasy spoon food. I have been coming here for many years (it's been around since the 70s) and it never disappoints. Diehards each have their own favourite combination so I'll share mine with you:
2 eggs scrambled well, home made hash browns, small breakfast hamburger patty with fried onions & gravy, white seed bagel (they have 10 kinds of bread) and unlimited coffee. This might run me in the neighborhood of 10 bucks depending on Nikos's mood.
An experience not to be missed.
They are open every day from 7am to 5pm except Mondays when they are closed.

“Nick knows (brunch)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Tiny greasy spoon with very friendly staff. Ordered the Mixed Grill with sausages, bacon, salami and ham, 3 eggs, hash browns and challah toast. The portions were very generous and the food was delicious. Loved the hash browns and salami; my eggs were also perfectly cooked. The banter between Nick and Mark was a delight to listen in on, and the service was extremely quick. Patrons kept coming and going keeping this place busy but well worth the wait. Watched Nick cook many breakfasts and he really knows his stuff. My bf called him "an artist" (brunch artist). The burger Nick was cooking up for someone when we left looked fabulous as well. Nick had someone run out to get us tea bags for our brunch, how great is that?? Would definitely return.

“COSMOS forever hungover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

I have been eating breaky here since the 70's and all that has changed is the bodies...and how hungover we all were/are. Thankfully there is a new generation of 20 somethings to fill that void, and they don't get up until 11, so we are good from 8-10 without any lineup usually.

This is typical breakfast with some humor and a generous dose of disorganization thrown in...chaos ensues around Noon, and they run out of food constantly...to the benefit of Espositos Market down the street.

The best part is the comraderie of the characters that still hangout (or like me, transplanted to Ottawa yet still coming home) there, and the banter that comes with it...sports and politics are gently melted together but the real topic is usually Nick or Nikky's ranting about nothing very important from the kitchen.

12 indoor stools (1 permanently broken) and an occasional patio make this an intimate eatery for the strong willed and strong stomached. Enjoy it and whatever you do...do NOT use the bathroon in winter (trust me, self explanatory when you enter)
