“Lovely old house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

The history and the spot this building is in just amazing while not all of the house is open it is still worth it the tour was very good and they even have a lamp that belonged to the second owner of the house that they have on show there!

I belive there was about $5 fee for the tour but my b&b had a pass so we did not have to pay!

“Don't miss this historical site.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

The house has an interesting history. Fully decorated and furnished to reflect the homes of that day. It is down by the water so a great place to visit if you are walking the shore.

“pretty house in a nice town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Beaconfield house is vey pretty inside and out, unfortunately, none of the original furniture remains. Still, it is worth seeing, and then go for a walk along the coast.

“A shadowy glimpse of history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

The house represents something of the tragedy of its times. Built for a wealthy local shipbuilder who had married the Lieutenant-Governor's daughter, the house was only occupied by them for 5 years. Mr. James Peake apparently remained mired in the traditions of wooden shipbuilding and could not transform his business to iron/metal ships. Of their 6 children, 4 died in infancy. Upon bankruptcy and handing the keys over to the mortgage holder, Mr. Peake left to try and make good in British Columbia where he died as an employee of a Gentleman’s Club. He never saw his wife and children after leaving PEI.

My wife and I love to speculate on the personal circumstances that wove through such a tragic existence as we toured the house. It is furnished with period items but nothing original due to the bankruptcy nor is the room use/allocation known. The mortgage holder took residency as a single man with his two single sisters...more speculation...With no heirs, the house was willed away and became a nurses residence for many years.

An interesting guided tour is offered that talks about many aspects of life back in the day. Little is known about the interior of the house from its construction until the nurses’ occupation.

“Part of Charlottetown's history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Worthwhile visit to this historical property on the waterfront. Home is furnished in period pieces and is worth the short visit. Easy to access from downtown so no worries about parking (there is however parking across the street). This is also a good base from which to undertake the 1.5 km walk of the Victoria Park Boardwalk (on the Boardwalk, just past the the cannons, is a good place to stop for a light lunch or ice cream)
