“Great rooftop bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

invited to The Drake hotel by friends for a night out during TIFF, after a great meal, thanks to the server for all the suggestions, she did a great job. It was very busy but food was great and service even better...i'd definitely recommend the desserts We were then invited to the rooftop for the rest of the evening, amazing place, a great fun crowd which helped the ambiance and the fund friendly mood.

“Trendy but average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Visited the Skyyard on a Sunday afternoon for brunch with some girlfriends. Be prepared to drop some serious cash if you want drinks with your meal. Also it was VERY hot and sunny on the rooftop, the umbrellas barely cover one person at the six person tables. I ordered the ALT, the egg white scramble was good but nothing outstanding. There are a lot better places in Toronto to get a nice brunch.

“Eclectic and terrific food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

This place is one of those small hotels (maybe 15 rooms) that looks like a converted flop house. While I did not see any of the rooms, our host, a personal friend of the owner, told us that this place is popular with the "B-list" entertainment stars in town. A small business group (8) went here on our host's advice and were not disappointed. Started on the rooftop bar, which is partially covered and partially open air (the evening was probably one of the top 10 weather days in Toronto). They have a raft of their own specialty drinks. We then migrated down to the main floor restaurant, which also has a bar and is split by a staircase that leads to the roof. Great service and selection of food. I had a tuna appetizer, that was essentially sushi, along with citrus slices and very thin slices of mild jalapenos. I would have never imagined the combination, but it worked for me. I had a great, but small lobster, others had steak, and everyone loved their meals.

“Ridiculously overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013 via mobile

We visited the Drake on the recommendation of a friend..."you MUST have the lobster nachos" she said. So we did. A small plate of nachos was $23.95. The lobster nachos were very good, don't get me wrong, but WAAAY overpriced. It's tortilla chips for crying out loud...put a few more on there and make it look larger! We also had the BBQ pork nigiri and "Drake Bake" (a selection of breads and 3 warm spreads), and 2 drinks. The bill: $60! First and last time...never again!

“Beware, unfair!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013 via mobile

I just hate the feeling of being taken advantage of! We were a party of 13. 5 adults and 8 teenagers. And we spent over 50 dollars per person. On what? The teens didn't drink alcohol and the rest of us very little...
Yes, the food was good - well, good pub food I should say. And the service was friendly and fast. But:
Amongst other things we ordered their signature dish: a 32 oz steak for 80 dollars. I asked the waitress if that was with the bone, or if it really was 32 oz of edible meat. She confirmed that it was that much meat. That's close to a kilogram and should have been enough for three people. Sure enough a huge plate came with - a huge bone. Must have been half a rib of a cow. And there was meat as well, nicely cut off the bone and cut into pieces. But it couldn't have been more than 18 oz of meat! I could have easily eaten this by myself! And for that 80 dollars?
The shock came in the end: they had the arrogance to "automatically include" a 15% tip in the bill. That was over one hundred dollars of tip! Yes, she was good and friendly and fast. But did she do work on our table alone in those two hours worth more than a hundred dollars? Certainly not! We talked to the manager and he told us that it was "their policy". Who cares, I ask? Does customer orientation mean that the customer has to be oriented by the patron? Tip is at the discretion of the guest - it must be that way! Well, after much discussion, we received a new bill, without the tip.
This place is a trendy place where the owner tries to make as much money as quickly as possible while it lasts. All accepted, but do stay fair please and deliver what you promise!
