“Better than almost all.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

Very good prices for very good dining. Wouldn't call it fine dining since the tables are too close together (other reviews mention this). The food was fresh and very nicely seasoned (flavourful).

Went for lunch here for the first time with some associates (who recommended it) and I was not disappointed. No rush to get us out (started at 12:30 and left at 3:00). Average age of lunch crowd was 55.

Very nice French atmosphere. Very good selection of wines (well priced). Definitely will repeat for dinner.

“Continues with good food and service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

I have enjoyed many nice meals at this French Bistro style restaurant. Always full with close contact tables and a cozy feel. There are always great specials and delicious desserts. Reasonably priced wines, competent, efficient service with good food. Ideal for a evening with friends that doesn't break the bank.

“Did not enjoy the food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

We went for lunch. There is a lunch menu and the regular menu. The restaurant was very busy. We found the tables too close to each other. We found it almost impossible to talk to each other as it was too noisy, even the server had difficulty hearing our orders because of the noise level. Some could consider a busy restaurant as a good sign and argue that this creates a nice atmosphere, we didn't feel that way as we were inconvenienced by the noise.

The soup of the day was good, the home made pâté was delicious, and the bread was average. We expect very good bread in a French restaurant. The home made pâté was a generous serving, enough pâté for 2, even 3 people. The mussels were good; however the steak frites meal was disappointing. While the steak was cooked as requested, it was not very good and was not tender. The frites were shoestring frites and here again, they were not very good.

After this experience, we had no appetite for dessert.

Service was okay, a bit rushed and mechanical, but timely. The decor is fine. There are many posters on the walls of shows that took place in France over the years, and it is nice to check these out.

All in all, we did not enjoy the experience.

“restaurant francais”

Restaurant is small and usually packed. Tables are too close together. Food is usually very good, but not always. Service is a bit irratic also.

“Lack of Knowledge Annoys”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

This restaurant definitely has its pros and cons. To start with pros:

1.Food is absolutely phenomenal during the summer season when the upstairs patio is open. All food is prepared on the grill and I highly recommend getting you dish with the grilled vegetables. The marlin, when available, is superb. Too bad the upstairs chef is not available year round!

2. The wait staff were great. Very accommodating and willing to engage in discussion.

The cons:

1. With a name like Merlot, you would expect this restaurant to know their wines and regulations. Sadly, this is not the case. Considering that there is only 2 wines available by the glass, this establishment should be aware of Ontario's AGCO regulations. YOU ARE ALLOWED TO BRING HOME OPENED BOTTLES OF WINE FROM RESTAURANT!!!! Management should really do their research and stop encouraging drinking and driving (the AGCO created this law to avoid drinking and driving).

2. For a restaurant named Merlot, why in the world are they using cheap, reception-style wine glasses?

Overall, I would go back - the food outweighs the lack of knowledge!
