“fancy, no; expensive, no; pretentious, no.....very good you bet!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

the restaurant is on baldwin street in toronto and we had never been there, though our family members had. We ate outside on the patio on a lovely if cool evening; the interior of the restaurant in an old home, with two fireplaces was really charming. Thus the ambience is superb. The wait staff, and we met four of them could not have been nicer nor more competent. The food we ate was a featured prix fixe of $35 and that delivered a starter, the main and a desert....and all three were delicious; Apparently the chef is celebrating his 10th anniversary at this location and all being well it will just get better and better, so get there while there is still room!

“Repeat trip still good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

The food was still very good though the menu was a little limited. The pork tenderloin main was great. The appetizer scallops were also excellent. The goat cheese appetizer was a bit small but tasty. Service was a little spotty.

“Wonderful !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Had a really wonderful lunch last week, made a reservation again for this coming July 21, very good menu... Very good wine...excellent service! La Bodega will become, though a bit out of our stomping ground, a place we will frequent in the near future!!!!

“Excellence on Baldwin St.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Baldwin Street is a strip of restos with cheap and cheerful as the touchstone. Students and hospital workers go there; professors and their guests end up at Bodega. The age difference--25 all over the street, 50 at Bodega--suggests this. But the prices are not hugely different. A few extra dollars at Bodega goes a long way.

There's an abundance of wonderful patio seating. The street is quiet so the seating is pleasant. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and sophisticated. The bathrooms are not for very tall people.

The $35 prix fixe offers excellent value. Apps one evening on the prix fixe included escargot, sweetbreads, salmon tartare, and "veggie tower"--grilled veggies mortared with chevre. Mains included steak frites, chicken, and grilled rainbow trout--all well prepared in generous portions. Off prix fixe, many of the choices are what you'd expect in an excellent bistro. The food is consistently well prepared and authentically French. The menu is short (10 apps, 10 mains, 4-5 desserts) to assure excellence in each section.

The desserts--cherry clafoutis to die for; wonderful lemon tart, etc. round the meal out well.

The wine list includes many low-priced options, some great mid-price values (e.g. J.Lohr 7 Oaks Cab Sauv $55) and a few splurges. You'll find something you like at the price you want to pay.

I've eaten here possibly 15 times over the last few years and never had a bad meal, either for lunch or dinner. Highly recommended.
