While we'd love to eat at Toronto's top-end restaurants every week, the cost would get out of hand pretty quickly. So it was awesome to find Biff's...a wonderful, moderately priced French restaurant with high quality, tasty food and comfortable atmosphere (no need to get dressed up)...what a true pleasure to have a memorable meal for two for only $150. The service was excellent - polished and attentive (constantly filling water glasses) and just about every server / staff-member seemed to know it was my wife's birthday and wished her so.
I had the foie gras to start - really well prepared and moderately priced at $21 (as good as any of the McEwan restaurants) and 3 oysters (great deal at $1 each). My wife had the goat cheese / roasted radicchio salad and really enjoyed it. For the mains, I had daube de beouf (super tender braised beef cheeks, mash potatoes, mushrooms, bacon chunks, soupy gravy) which was excellent and my wife had the duck confit which she also loved.
I had the creme brulee for dessert which was exceptionally good -- very creamy and light, one of the best I've every had. My wife had crepe suzette which she didn't like it much...but we think this was more due to the dessert itself not being to her liking, not due to the preparation.
If we had one criticism, it would be that some staff did not seem to know the menu particularly well - they had to go away to get answers to our questions. Not a huge deal but something they definitely should work on - I don't think the menu changes very often so there's no excuse for not knowing it inside and out.
Overall, we had a great time - staff were just fantastic and the food very good. What a contrast to the $500 we spent at Harbour Sixty last week (see TripAdvisor review) - if I were offered a free dinner at both, I'd choose Biff's every time. We'll definitely be back.
