The Suites at 1 King West is an adequate but not plush business hotel. A number of issues, taken together, made it less than comfortable. Given the number of preferable options in Toronto, I am not likely to return, nor would I recommend this hotel to others.
For someone needing to stay a week or more, the concept might be attractive. The rooms come with a small kitchen, dishwasher, and washer and dryer. I didn’t use any of these, but they appeared to be in working order. The room itself was reasonably well decorated, although small for a suite. A small desk was provided, with a wired internet connection for $9.99 a day. The bathroom was nothing outstanding – no bathtub, just a shower with weak water pressure.
The tower I was in seemed old, even though the room had been redecorated; this was most evident in the room’s insulation and heating / fan. A colleague told me he had stayed in the hotel’s other tower before, and been impressed with the room, but that his room on the 45th floor in my tower during this stay was much shabbier. None of my three colleagues liked their rooms during this stay.
Negatives to consider before booking:
• The floor to ceiling windows in my room let in a lot of cold air and noise from the wind (it was December, but not particularly cold or windy).
• The fan on the heater / air conditioner was extremely noisy, to the point that it woke me up several times each the night when it came on. Because the windows let in so much cold air, the heater needed to run most of the night.
• The bed was very firm, which I found uncomfortable.
• I was supposed to be in a non-smoking room. While my room (1602) itself had been heavily perfumed, the hallway outside my room reeked of cigarette smoke.
• The water pressure in the shower was weak – I couldn’t get the shampoo and conditioner fully out of my hair.
• The hotel does not stock the same toiletries other hotels do. A colleague had forgotten his mini toothpaste. At most business hotels, you can get a free mini toothpaste at the front desk if you’ve forgotten yours. At the Suites at 1 King West, they directed my colleague to the Shoppers store across the street to buy toothpaste.
• The room next door had put out room service trays for pickup before I arrived in the late afternoon. The next morning, they were still there. The next afternoon, still there. Two days later when I checked out, they were still sitting out in the hallway with the food & beer drying up on them. That was pretty disgusting.
All in all, for the money you can find a better business hotel with more accommodating service in Toronto.
