On a recent early morning flight home from Pearson International airport in Toronto, we were surprised to see a couple of new restaurants in the departure area. It was a change from the good old Tim Horton stand by.
The first thing you see at the Heirloom Bakery Café is that there are iPads in front of every seat at the counter or the tables.
A very helpful staff member explained the the menu was on the iPads, you scroll through the screens and add the items you want to your 'cart' and when you are finished you send the order. The screen then suggests that you input your flight number and the system will keep you advised of your flight status, boarding times etc,
Within minutes your choices start arriving. As we were there for breakfast time we had just ordered yoghurt and fruit and eggs and toast. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the bacon crisp and the toast still warm. The bakery is obviously popular for takeaways and the small selection of food that we had would suggest that everything is freshly and well prepared.
While you are eating you can surf the web on the iPad and the only thing missing was swiping your card in the iPad and leaving! At our request the staff member arrived at our table to make the transaction.
What a change from the traditional airport food.
