“Fish Tacos and Bourbon, yo!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This place is a keeper. Been there a bunch of times and have always enjoyed the experience.

Great vibe to the place, at the bar or in the back during the summer. Music is vinyl in the form of excellent hip hop grooves. Service is stellar.

Fantastic drinks - I recommend the Bourbon lemonade.

Fish tacos are a must as is the tuna cerviche. I'd pass on the guacamole - use those funds for something tastier, like a pork taco.

Have the dessert - it finishes the evening well.

Enjoy.

“One of Toronto's Must Eat Spots”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

When I visited Grand Electric the wait for a table was approximately 1.5 hours so you must be prepared for the fact that a wait of some duration is possible. However, when finally making it in the wait turned out to be so very much worth it. The tacos are delicious! We had a variety including the barbacoa and pig tail among others. Every one was a hit. They also have a great selection of bourbon/bourbon cocktails which pair with the food very well. This is the best Mexican food you can get in Toronto, maybe even Canada?

“Great Mexican Food in a low key setting.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

At quarter to six on a rain impending Sunday evening, a line 40 people deep are huddled together on Queen Street West in Parkdale. The Grand Electric does not accept reservations. But at six the door opens and a lovely young lady is the gate keeper holding a clip board ready to take names, ensuring that diners will be seated in an orderly fashion. As we reach the front door - she lets us know that the only tables remaining are the communal tables in the heated patio. We don't mind, since you never know what interesting people you might get to meet.

As we are ushered past the dining room which features a large bar and several tables, the small but bustling kitchen, thru an open air passage, to a cook hovering over a BBQ, and into the patio. There's a tiki bar and wooden picnic tables lining this space - when we arrive at our table a young couple are already having a sip of beer.

The menu, a large back lit sign hovers above the diners, and our waitress is immediately there asking to help us. We order the guacamole with house made chips - which arrives within a minute of our order. It is as delicious as I've been told. After looking over the short, yet very interesting menu we decide to try all the taco's - since at $3.5 each - it doesn't seem to be a risk. I actually have to flag down the waitress - not because she doesn't care - but that is how it is done. She is running as hard as she can to keep up. She stops and takes down our order and carries on.

The taco's seem small - but are packed with flavour. There is pig's tail, pig cheek, pork, and fish - each combined with ingredients that sing in our mouths. Two tacos per person were more then filling - and left room for dessert - a creative and delicious take on chocolate moose cake and key-lime pie. Our entire bill was just over $50 which included a beer, coke, and two appetizers of grilled sweet corn.

Eating at the Grand Electric was a fun low-key experience with great Mexican food. I give it two thumbs up.

“Great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

So, they were closed for 2 weeks and we got really lucky, normally there is a 45minute wait, but we got there at 6:30 and walked right in.

Have bourbon if you like that spirit, but stay away if you don't, even in bourbonade, too burbonie. Drinks were a bit pricey, they definitely add up.

We had the squid, the Miami ribs, both extremely tasty. We tried all the tacos (yes we like food) my husband had 3 beef cheeks, they were awesome! The desserts are small, almost individual, but very tasty. The lemon and chocolate pecan were our choices, well worth it. The only other note, we were not served cutlery, the server took a while to bring it for the aps, then encouraged us to eat with our hands and forgot the cutlery again on the second app, after taking them away...a little odd.

After all said and done we had 8/9 tacos, two aps, 2 drinks and 1 desserts for about $100, Not bad, but not cheap, but well worth a try!

“A Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

My wife and I were coming into town for a concert at Echo Beach and since the reviews were stellar and the location was nearby, we decided to dine at Grand Electric. We arrived just before 6pm to find a line of about 20 people already forming outside. It was a beautiful evening so we opted to sit outside on the back patio (were offered communal seating indoors or or at the bar or private seating outside). Walking by the charcoal grill on the way to our table, I couldn't wait to order!! We were seated immediately, given a bottle of water and 2 glasses and advised of the drink specials.

We both had a draft beer with chips and guacamole to start - the guac was fresh and tasty as were the chips. The dinner menu is a large billboard with many options (10 tacos, 10 appetizers and 2 desserts) , but no detailed descriptions. We asked our waitress about a few of the items and were told that the plates were small and meant to be shared - tapas style. We ordered the spicy squid to start which was a lightly breaded flash-fried calamari tossed in a spicy 'buffalo-wing sauce' and covered in thinly sliced jalapenos (delicious), we then ordered a chorizo plate that was a mixture of sausage, cheese, potato chips and a fried egg, served with fresh tortillas (amazing - my mouth waters now, just thinking about it). Next, a couple of tacos - spicy chicken and baja fish (both were fantastic). Desert options consisted of small pudding-cup options. We had the key lime and mexican bread pudding (very tasty).

Dinner for two with 2 beers, tax and tip was less than $80, but the experience was priceless. We will definitely be back!!!
