“Coupon Mecca”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Came at 8 p.m. on a Sunday. The sign out front wasn't lit so if you didn't peer inside the front door you would think the place was closed. There were three available tables out of the 10 or so in the room. A significant portion of the patrons could be overhead speaking in Japanese if you want to use that as a gauge of the authenticity of the food. Like almost everyone that comes here I was using a coupon from a daily deal site.
All the food ordered seemed pretty much - meh - nothing outstanding and noting awful. Don't come here for quality - come here to gorge on coupon-discounted grub. The service was good - in fact there was constant attention to refilling the tea, water and clearing the table - in fact maybe a degree too attentive. Our table was served by no less than three very polite servers.
Even though the food was nothing great I'll likely be back sometime next year with another coupon.

“Needs Improvement”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

I went a few nights ago to Sushi Kai with Groupons and was fairly disappointed. The menu itself lacks variety and we felt restricted to the few items they offered. The edamame was awful, overcooked and lacked flavour. The sushi pieces were very small with very little fish. I found that the salmon tasted a little weird, and was also quite warm. This made me nervous by the end of the night because I feared I would get food poisoning.

Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. The service was good, the waitresses were attentive, but the food needs improvement in terms of portions and variety considering they charge almost $6 for 6 pieces of small sushi.

“Neighborhood sushi”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012 via mobile

Japanese food is either a hit or a miss. There are huge similarities and little differences - these differences are what really matter. We went to have sushi because of the groupin offer. It was worth the CAD 19 I paid for dinner for 2. You pay what you get - ambiance, service and quality of food - half as good. Would I pay full price? No.

“Good sushi/bland decor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

If you're looking for a restaurant with atmosphere, don't bother coming here. While there are fewer choices than I'm used to, the quality was good. This place only has seating for about 30 people, and it was packed, with more people waiting at the entrance. We usually stay at the Best Western nearby when we're in Toronto. This place may not be fancy, but it's better than Hokkaido.
