I finally made it to Casa Loma after several years of visits to Toronto.
As I didn't drive it was a bit of a trip to get there. Basically one gets off the Yellow Line at Dupont station, walks up Spadina to Baldwin Steps, climbs them and then walks around to the entrance. Or there are other ways of getting there by transit, detailed in the Casa Loma website--part of the problem being that the site is between Dupont and St. Clair stations and not conveniently transit-accessible.
The weather was still fairly warm for October when I visited (until the sun started to set) and the grounds were still in decent shape. The flower gardens are very nice, as is the fountain and the views of the house itself are spectacular. As are the views of downtown Toronto through the trees, because the house is fairly high up on a bluff--hence the stair climb to get to it.
Pellatt apparently spared no expense in the building, which means that in the short-term he had a very impressive house. In the long-term, of course, he wasn't able to keep it. I'm not sure that I personally would call it a castle, because it doesn't seem defensible to me. Perhaps a small palace or a chateau...
The inside of the house is also impressive. I especially liked the glass ceilng in the conservatory. The period furnishings and decorations were a nice touch and one could form a picture of how people would have been living in the house in the 1910s.
There was certainly a world of difference between the family and the help, too. Though the maid's room I saw didn't look too terribly uncomfortable.
The decorations/furnishings seem to be confined to the first two floors. The third appears to be devoted to Pellatt's contributions to the war efford in the Great War. There is also access to at least one of the towers, but the stairway is really narrow and steep and by that point my legs were sore enough that I didn't feel like attempting it.
It was a nice place to visit, but I'm not sure that, having done it once, I'd do it a second time.
