Owner description: Mackenzie House is the restored home of William Lyon Mackenzie, Toronto's first Mayor, a radical journalist and publisher, and leader of the Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada. This house was given to Mackenzie by friends and supporters, when he retired from public life, and in recognition of his many years of serving the community. “Victorian Christmas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

My daughter and I went to Mackenzie House and nearly missed it hidden among the neighbourhood houses, The admission price was affordable, it was a Special event so we got to make a printed souvenir in color. The staff member that did the printing part of the visit was very friendly and informed of the process. We had another guide to take us through the house and she was really friendly and well versed and when she told us she was a volunteer I was impressed how passionate she was about the house, and told us alot about the period lifestyle and the MacKenzies and their family. I deffinately recommend to take time off from shopping and spend some time in the MacKenzie House. As many people have posted there are working gas lights

“The home of Toronto's first mayor.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

This is a fine example of a home furnished in 1850s style. The guided tour is very good with staff in period costume. The guide was very friendly and had a vast knowledge of the house. There is also a printing room and press attached to the house which you can try your hand at. It is also fascinating to see the gas lights still in use.

“Excellent museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2012

We visited this on our last day in Toronto because we were running out of things to do and thought this might kill half an hour, however when we got there, we got a much more detailed guided tour of both the house of William Lyon Mackenzie and of a printing workshop than we expected.

The guides (Kate and Mark - both dressed in period costume) were both very knowledgeable and interesting. A real surprise was the print workshop. This sounds quite dull, but Mark (who actually undertook a printing apprenticeship to further his knowledge) made the topic fascinating and we got a chance to actually use the 19th century printing press to take home a memento of our visit.

If you are into ghosts, the Mackenzie House is reputedly the most haunted location in Toronto. But even if you are not, this is a fine place to visit.
