I stayed at the Comfort Suites for 4 nights recently, and found it generally very good. It is one of the cheapest large hotels you'll find in the downtown area. Although probably at the outskirts of 'downtown', it is very convenient for the Eaton Centre and Dundas subway station, which then gets you all over the city. There is also a tram running along outside the building (although i personally got around fine without using trams). It took me about 20-25 mins to walk all the way to the CN tower, so it is easily walkable to other downtown attractions. I didn't have any problems with the neighbourhood- I saw more homeless people etc in the central downtown part- although i would definitely stick to the main roads at night (which are all well lit with wide pavements).
Rooms were a great size and clean, although my shower wasn't as great as another reviewer claimed. The TVs had about 60 channels, which is great to someone used to the Uk selection, and there were movies and playstation games available at extra cost.
The hotel has a nice big lobby and a very decent restaurant/bar attached. There is a slightly tacky gift shop inside which is never-the-less useful for bottles of water/ evening snacks etc. As others have mentioned, the breakfast is very basic- sugary cereals, toast, muffins and fruit basically (but it is included in the room rate, so is still worth going to). I found the staff to be generally helpful and polite, although i never had any cause to really 'test' them in that respect, as everything went without a hitch.
As a last point, I would recommend getting the airport shuttle bus if arriving at Pearson airport, as you can get off at Bond Place and its only a 5 minute walk along the road- should be much cheaper than a taxi.
