“Better Than Expected.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

THIS REVIEW IS PART OF A TOUR ACROSS CANADA, SO MOSTLY ONLY ONE NIGHT OR TWO NIGHT STOP OVERS.

I had read reports of this hotel, that it was dated and too big... the reports were correct, however, the hotel is good, great location, and the bedroom itself is very big and comfy. The only problem appears to be the bathrooms, which are very dated, and in need of new tiling, and up dating.

The hotel lobby, is huge, and like a busy train station !!

But for one night it was ok. Drink prices in the bar were expensive compaired to other hotels.

We had always stayed at the Delta Chelsea when in Toronto but will NOT stay here again.

Reception area has a whole new look but personally I think removing the beautiful big leather chairs and beautiful big tables from this area took away the charm and the character.

I would be concerned about privacy here. Someone else's receipt containing his private information was slipped under our door. We did not get a receipt so I wonder who got ours ? When I brought this to the attention of reception staff, the attitude was very much one of indifference.

Bed was comfortable and pillows not too bad...but...

Duvet was lumpy and uncomfortable because all the filling has gone into outside edges and into random pockets. There was not enough filling in the middle area to keep you warm. Because of this ,I removed it before going to bed. When I saw the bottom sheet, I was horrified because it looked like the bed had been slept it. ( see photo ).

I called reception who sent housekeeping staff and they changed bottom sheets but tried to convince me the bed had not been slept in.

After they left, I started to put the top sheet back on only to discover a large coffee/tea stain on it.
( see photo ). I took this down to reception and we were offered 2 days of free breakfasts. I felt we should have been given an upgraded room. When I went back to the room, I discovered a stain on the duvet as well. ( see photo )

The bathroom was much in need of some maintenance. ( see photos )

There are no coffee makers ! There is a kettle and one teabag and one sachet of INSTANT coffee. YUK !!! Instant coffee in these days of coffee drinkers. I don't even know anybody who would drink instant coffee.

The headboard had a coating of dust on it thick enough to write your name in. ( see photo )

This Hotel has changed owners. Tried to go up market but sadly the quality went into free fall.

Check in Staff in need of training. Room given appeared to be ready, later found that the beds had the appearance of already having been slept in prior to our taking the room. Further to this we found what looked like fresh coffee stains on one sheet and the comforter which was lumpy and should have been discarded long ago.
Generally the staff showed little interest in guest comfort.
No coffee making equipment in the room, just a kettle and one sachet of instant coffee and one teabag for two people. Were we expected to share?
Breakfast for 2 was $47 plus tip for buffet.

A bill was posted under the door our room. This bill was for another guest on a different floor and room number, Guest FULL details clearly stated.
We took this bill to reception desk. The receptionist there took the bill, showing great disinterest like it was something they always did. When the receptionist was told. "We hope our bill will not be given to some other guest!" She merely smirked. Giving the impression she cared even less.
As for free wireless internet. All I was able to get was a security risk warning, see 'photo'.

Room Tip: upper floors are quieter.

Thank you to Ron Pellerine and his wonderful staff for our stay during the TIFF. Location is perfect for downtown core, close to public transit and walking about exploring the City.

Staff were very professional and caring, always a smile and great attitude! Our room was very clean and comfortable, we enjoyed dining at the Hotel and also caught a super Blues band at the Monarch Pub.

We had a wonderful stay and we'll be back.

Thank you,

Ann & Anthony Hume

I will start with the positives about the Eaton Chelsea Hotel.

Great location, beautiful lobby, and excellent service from all staff. A special mention to the concierge desk staff and Bell Staff who were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and customer service oriented.

Guestrooms leave a lot to be desired!
1. Walls and wallpaper are filthy and peeling
2. Bathroom floor is stained (maybe dirty)
3. Although there were towels, there were no facecloths
4. Remote control and phone on desk were dusty (gross)
5. There was black hair on the soap dish and in the sink (I have blond hair)
6. There was something weird and suspicious going on with the sheets. There was a fitted sheet which was terribly wrinkled and poorly fitted on the bed. Then there was a flat sheet placed on top of the fitted sheet. If I did not know better, I would say the fitted sheet was not changed from a previous user and the flat sheet was placed on top to camouflage. However, it was certainly NOT camouflaged, it was quite obvious.
7. After my shower this morning, the smoke alarm went off. I called front desk who said that I should not worry, this happens all the time because of the steam from the shower. Well, if that happens all the time…perhaps it should be fixed.

I would not recommend this hotel unless the city is sold out. There are many hotels in Toronto around the same price point and in the same area. Until the guestrooms are renovated and cleaned up, I would shop around and find a hotel with clean walls, fresh sheets, and void of obvious dust.

Room Tip: Check the room before you commit to taking it.

This was our first stay at the Eaton Chelsea since the change from Delta and did not enjoy the experience. First off putting was the glaring white everything in entrance way. The choice of white is good for a picket fence, but to paint the entire area in this was overkill. The hotel should have taken time to update the rooms – especially the bathroom which is showing its age. And what is the deal with no coffee machine? They give you something to heat water with sachets of coffee – yuk. Service was fine, except when we were leaving and wanted a cart to make one trip with our baggage – none was available and the bellboy blamed customers on taking them and not returning them?!? The location is the best part, but for our next trip we will try another hotel. Too bad as we almost always stayed here in the past. We miss the Delta touch!

Dear Sylrob2005,

Thank you for your feedback. I do apologize that your first stay as an Eaton did not go well and was not the same service you experienced before. We have made some changes to the property and do note your comments regrading the decor and choice of color. I also apologize that you did not appreciate the updated amenities in your room and have passed that feedback to our rooms division for review. We are planning the next phase of renovations to the hotel and our guest rooms and are excited for the completion of the project. Thank you once again for your feedback.

Thank you,
