We had booked a room nearby, but cancelled after seeing the reviews on trip advisor. Previous reviews for the Grange were also poor, but we decided to take a chance. Contrary to others, we found the place to be clean and friendly. Our room smelt a little when we first entered, but we opened the window and all was well after a short time. They came and cleaned the rooms and made beds every day. The suite facilities were just what we needed to prepare breakfast, lunch and snacks, and we had internet access in the room, which meant that we could do our homework everyday before heading out. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The area is run down, but the Grange is so close to great facilities - we in particular found the free community swimming pool nearby and the children's park really important for entertaining our 6 year old at low cost - also fantastic music and great food in the Kensington Market and Chinatown areas. I would certainly stay here if we ever come back!

We normall would stay at a higher end hotel but when we arrived in Toronto without a reservation, this was one of the only two hotels available downtown.
I asked to see the room as we arrived. It was clean and bright and looked freshly painted.
The beds were basic (one double and one single) as was the furniture. The bathroom was very basic and clean. The kitchen was clean as well.
The weather was very warm. The window opened which was very nice.
The hotel is a few blocks from Queen street. During the day I felt safe walking around. I would not have walked around at night even though the hotel manager said it was safe as long as I stuck to the streets and did not go into the parks. We took a cab from the hotel door to the theatre at night and had no problem.
It was noisy in the morning with kids and school buses.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and would stay there again.

There's city project housing across the street, there was filth on the floor and I woke up in the middle of the night to rats—Yes, you read correctly, rats—in the vents. Nightmare.....

The location is a bit dodgy, surrounded by low-rent housing. A brisk 20 minute walk to downtown. The major street three blocks to the south has "funky" shops and restaurants.

The check-in office is a cluttered mess, looks like somebody's home office. Friendly service.

The room was small, old, dank, not well appointed. The mattress was not up to North American standards, was what you might get in a Pension in Europe.

Overall, reminded me of my back-packer/youth hostel days. Okay if you are slumming it on your own, but NOT the place to stay if you are on vacation (especially if your wife/significant other/etc is with you). Would have moved on, but had pre-paid in full.
