“Mostly good vibes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2014

This is a nice hotel - nothing luxurious but good hub to explore the city of Toronto. Situated a little bit north of the core centre and reachable nicely by two streetcar (tram) lines. From the tram stop you have to walk appr. 250 metres to the hotel.
The hotel has 14 floors and appr. 200 rooms. Some of the rooms are facing to Jarvis Street, some has a bit more peaceful view to the inner yard.
Our room had two double beds and it was spacious enough. Also the bathroom was ok with a bathtub. Appr. 30 television channels, not very many international though.
Sound insulation is average, but the weak link is the door, which closes with force and hence with some noise too.
Hotel has a free buffet breakfast, whics was clearly better than in hotels of this class in average. There were scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and small hamburger-style beefs (selection varied a bit from day to day).
Clerks at the reception were mostly friendly and courteous, and we were given a late checkout when requested.
I can recommend this hotel.

Great location, we were able to walk to the fabulous market, St. James park, great restaurants, coffee shops etc... Hotel is older but well cared for and staff were awesome. Breakfast was good although it was a bit warm and crowded, they kept the food trays plentiful.

This was the perfect place to stay while visiting Toronto. It's location meant we could walk most any place we wanted to go. There were lots of great shops and restaurants nearby as well. The breakfast each day had lots of choices and was included in the price!! The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the room was quite clean. The carpet might need changing. The staff were very, very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely go back!

We had a pleasant stay here, we got a corner room which gave us a great view of the city and quite a few restaurants and shops were within walking distance. The included breakfast was handy, the food quality was fairly average but overall the stay was fairly convenient.

Our first ever visit to Canada started & ended at this hotel with a side trip to Niagara Falls in between.
Our first stay was for 3 nights,on arrival we were checked in by Ron,very friendly, efficient & able to answer any questions we had,Ron was a real star!
We were in room 415,nicely tucked away from the main corridor,it was spotless & comfortable,30 minutes after we arrived at the room the phone rang & it was Ron asking if everything was ok,nice touch.
This place is in a wonderful location, during our 2 visits we were able to walk to downtown, the Distillery district, the waterfront & the CN Tower, the area is full of restaurants & bars, there is a nice park next door & the wonderful St Lawrence Market is nearby.
Our return from Niagara Falls was something of a nightmare so seeing Ron at the checkout was very welcome, like coming home, this time we were in room 508,a bit apprehensive on seeing that it was right by the lifts but noise wasn't a problem until our last night, nothing to do with the proximity of the lifts however, just rude people shouting, screaming & playing loud music at 3.30 in the morning.
As for the hotel itself I would love to finish off by not finding any faults but sadly I cannot, this hotel is a well used property,in need of work which I believe is to start later this year,of the 3 lifts 1 seems to be permanently out of order, the other 2 cannot cope making travelling in them painfully slow,as with other Holiday Inn Express' we have stayed in breakfast can be a nightmare, the breakfast room is too small & badly laid out, there is a large variety of food which is good & the staff do a wonderful job of keeping it topped up,just try getting to it or finding somewhere to eat it,not the first HIE we've experienced this & probably won't be the last!
Overall fantastic location, wonderful staff,we really enjoyed our stay at this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the courtyard, they have windows that open, those facing the street have fixed w...

The busy front office staff is friendly, accommodating, and do what they can to make guests happy. But, the hotel has challenges: there are 3 elevators, only two worked when I was at the hotel; the underground parking garage shares the same elevators as the rooms ($20 CAD per day to park); minimal counter space in the bathroom; the facility (and rooms) are worn and in need of attentive and detailed cleaning or repair (maintenance fixed the AC in my room so it worked properly on the SECOND night); and, panhandlers are across from the hotel. (I planned my walking routes to and from the hotel to avoid potential problems.) On the plus side: you can walk to the St. Lawrence Market, Old Town, Younge Street, etc; the parking includes in-out privileges; breakfast is included (styrofoam plates/plastic service pieces); 4-cup coffee makers in the room; bed is comfortable; pillows are super; good TVs; wifi is included; and, the manager and staff are friendly and customer-focused. Holding many gold/silver/platinum hotel loyalty cards as a business road-warrior, I have certain expectations. I wanted to buy this hotel a can of Resolve to clean the sofa in my room.

I am very surprised at the rating this hotel has. The common areas and lobby are worn and don't look very clean. Our room was smelly and dirty and dark. Needs to be remodeled, and better lighting. The mattress seriously needs to be replaced, very sagging . The AC/fan was a joke. One night it would not even come on. No thermostat control when it did come on, so it was either on all the time or off. Not usable this way. Very noisy too. Front desk person seemed completly uninterested in hearing this. No mini fridge in room! How odd for the price of this place. $10 a night to get one. Very low lighting in halls made it dingy. The situation with the elevators is ridiculous. Only 2 of 3 working, programmed poorly and extremely slow. In AM lines of people on each floor. Many take stairs up 10 or more floors. We were in elevator for 10 minutes to go from lobby to 10th floor. Breakfast room crowded and difficult to deal with. Not worth $150 or more per night. Would not stay here again.
