We were guests of the hotel from May 30 to June 2. We booked on Hotwire and had a rate of $139.00 US. Hotwire categorizes this as a 41/2 star. It's not. We are most certainly glad we didn't pay more.
We had looked forward to staying here. We have visited Toronto multiple times and although we had not stayed here, we had been to the bar and restaurant several times while previously attending conferences and conventions. We had previously stayed at the Intercontinental on Bloor Street and were most pleased with that hotel.
The physical plant is lovely. The lobby is large and handsomely decorated, and the soaring atrium restaurant and bar at the front of the hotel still impresses after many years.
Our room was nicely decorated in honey coloured, slightly cheap looking furnishings. We noted, however, that the elevator areas on our floor and several others were not decorated in the more contemporary style we saw on some other floors. It may be that there is a distinction in room furnishings, too. Housekeeping was OK, but there were some maintenance issues that included peeling paint in the bathroom and a piece of rag wedged in between the mirror and backspalsh. The body lotion was past date and was curdled and watery. Bedding and toweling were fine, but only one bathrobe was provided. There was no turndown or refresh service. Happily for us, there was a coffee maker. The hotel offers 24 hour room service but selections after 11:00 pm are very limited.
Our biggest issue with the hotel was service. Check-in was unpleasant. Despite the fact that we are Priority Club members and had pre-registerd for a bonus offered to those staying at least 2 nights, we were advised that we were not eligible because we had only booked through Hotwire.
The concierge service was the worst we've ever encountered. All those behind the desk seemed almost completely unaware of the current Toronto dining scene, bereft of suggestions, and unwilling to even look up phone numbers for restaurants to make reservations. (We provided them with them.) We were several times misinformed about closing times of restaurants, resulting in us not having a place to eat after a late theatre performance in North York.
Food , drinks (the Mojito is unrecognizable), and service in the bar were not good. Our waitress on 2 occasions was surly. We were also told that last call was at 11:45, despite the fact that the hotel information book and conciege both said that the bar closes at 1:00 am. We later saw others being served at 12:30 am.
The doorman was rarely at the door. There is a button on the phone in one's room that is supposed to be an "ask anything" service. We called several times. No one had an answer ... ever. Instead, we were shuffled from department to department until we gave up in frustration.
The hotel is well located to Union Station, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the St. Lawrence Market, a number of good restaurants, and connects to the Convention Centre. A late check out of 2:00 pm. can be arranged. On line check- in service for airlines is complimentary at the business centre.
If you can get a good rate, as we did, one can look past the problems, but this hotel most certainly does not merit paying more than $170.00.
