I stayed here for 1 night with my mother toward the end of the year, as we were in town to see a Maple Leafs game. I booked this room about a month in advance, and received a very good non-refundable rate of $111/night. For this price, I couldn't pass up the Royal York. Arriving by train, the location is perfect - you can even get from the train station to the hotel and to the Air Canada Centre without going outside. I even joined the Fairmont President's Club before hand to see if it would get any advantages - besides a free paper, I'm not sure it did. It's supposed to get you free internet and local calling during your stay.
Our room was on the 5th floor, out of the west side of the building - with two double beds. The room was a decent size, but not huge compared with what you might get at a more modern hotel. The decor was very elegant - true of most former CP hotels, and everything was in working order, but definitely showing its age a bit. If you like everything to appear new...stay at a new hotel. Still, there was a 32 inch flat screen TV, bathrobes and some very nice toiletries. It's a fairly large hotel, so I can see having a bit of walk from the elevator to your room if you're at the end of the hall - ask for a room near the elevator if you don't like walking.
Checkin/Checkout was a breeze...as was getting the hotel to store our bags for the afternoon while we did some shopping. The service really did live up to the Royal York name.
It should also be mentioned - staying at this hotel is not as much about the finest in everything (thought it is definitely 4 star worthy!), this hotel is a piece of Canadian history, without just about every celebrity, monarch or VIP to visit Toronto having stayed here at some point. The lobby and walkways are all visually stunning - and even if you're not staying at this hotel, it is a tourist attraction by itself. It's worth staying at once if you visit Toronto frequently.
The best thing about this place had to be the location for us - the hotel's connected into Toronto's PATH network, so you can walk to thousands of shops (including the Eaton Centre), the subway, the train station, the bus station, ACC, etc without ever setting foot outside...a huge benefit in the winter. I would definitely stay here again at the bargain price we paid, and maybe for even a bit more.
