“Nice hotel with old charm but badly needs updating!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

Stayed at The Royal York last week for 5 days. We were given a "non-smoking room" that reeked of smoke! The room on the second floor was a studio suite and was very roomy with two double beds (although we requested a king). The beds were comfortable. The bathroom badly needs to be updated - squeaky tub, dripping faucets, tired, dated paint and wall paper. The hotel lobby is grand and opulent. The Library Bar was expensive (although this week I'm at the Fairmont in Vancouver and the prices are even higher here!) This hotel is well-located in the heart of downtown and was very convenient to the Toronto Convention Centre.

Thank you for the review of your stay. I apologize for the odour encountered in your guestroom. We do have machines available that remove smells and I apologize this option was not presented during your stay. I am delighted you found the room to be spacious and the beds comfortable. We have recently commenced the first stage of a renovation plan with updating 200 guestrooms. It is wonderful to learn you found The Fairmont Royal York to be well located in the heart of downtown Toronto.

We just spent 3 nights on the gold floor. It was a great place. The lobby is just amazing, old europe looking with the ceiling painted. We arrived, checked our car into valet, then was asked to go to the 12th floor to check-in. When we got there they gave us our keys and asked for the luggage tags, then lead to the lounge for d'oeuvres (which is served every night for 5-7). When we where done our luggage was in our room. As you would expect turn down serves every night. The next morning we got up for breakfast (included and served in the lounge) and meet a fellow guest Michelle Jean (Governor General). That evening my wife wreaked her heal and asked one of the employees if she knew where to take them to get fixed, she said to drop them off she'll take care of them. The next day her when we got back to the room they where there fixed no charge. During the day there is drinks and desserts in the lounge. The rooms are clean and roomy. Same with the bathroom. We'll be back every time we're in Toronto. There is a nice but little pool and more then a couple of good restaurants in the hotel. As well it's close to everything.

Room Tip: The Gold Floor is the best bet.

Recently stayed here with my husband for 5 nights. Got a fairmont room with 2 very comfortable double beds. Extremely clean room of a decent size.
Adore the charm of this hotel. From the exquisite lobby, to all the detailed work in elevators , to crystal door knobs on the doors in hotel room. Also enjoyed the proper glasses in room, including wine glasses, wine opener, coffee mugs, stainless steel spoons....creamers chilled in minibar fridge. All the little things that make staying at this historic hotel reminiscent of the days when it was in it's prime.

Service was excellent from check-in at front desk, to housekeeping, to concierge, to business center to bell hop

Underground "PATH" access to Union Station for trains and subway and all the shops, food places, LCBO etc in the PATH

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of October 2012. We had a good room with a king size bed which we LOVED. It was very comfortable. The rooms and bathrooms are a bit small but it is a historic hotel and so it was expected. However, it was well appointed with everything we could want. We had the B&B package which included the buffet breakfast which was outstanding! Made to order omlettes was a very nice touch. We could skip lunch as the breakfast was so filling. I would stay again when traveling to Toronto. Reception recommended taking the Airport Express bus ($80/couple return) from the airport as the hotel is second stop from the airport and second last stop going back to the airport. Not having to worry about the cost of a cab if there are traffic issues (there was on the way back) was great.

Disappointing for a Fairmont. Rooms are small though they seem to have been updated recently. Its centrally located but generally expensive for what you get. I booked my stay through expedia and reserved a king bed only to find that Fairmont (at least the Royal York) does not honour preferences like king beds if its not booked through their website. It also has that annoying habit of gouging you by charging you for an internet connection

Thank you for your review. I apologize that you did not receive the bed type requested. We try our best to honour requested bed types, but unfortunately at times we may encounter an inventory shortage in one of our room categories. I apologize for the negative impact this had on your stay, but am happy to learn you found our location to be central. For future visits to any Fairmont property, you may find value in joining our loyalty program, Fairmont President’s Club (FPC), where you receive a personalized room preference profile, along with other value added benefits such as complimentary internet access. Spent a weekend in Toronto meeting some friends who were staying around the corner for a conference. I love the grand feel and the history of the hotel. However, I was given a room that while completely clean and well equipped, was filled with the sound of the elevators zooming up and down. I know it sounds strange, but you can't make this stuff up. Needless to say, it made it hard to sleep.

The safe that you normally get in your room to lock up your laptop, etc., was not in mine. I mentioned this on check out, and they said they are working on equipping all the rooms with safes.

So, make sure to ask for a room with a safe and far from the elevators.
