Our daughter took my husband and I out for brunch at the Gilead Cafe on King street for Father's Day. It was wonderful! There were typical items that you would expect to find on a brunch menu like eggs bennies, omelettes, and hash, but they were anything but typical! In Jamie Kennedy's hands these brunch mainstays were elevated to epicurean heights without a trace of pretention! Even my husband who usually doesn't have much to say about any meal, had the eggs benedict, and said "I don't know what's in this hollanaise sauce but it tastes so much different than at other places. It's great! The best I've had!" I had the asparagus omelette and it was perfect. The asparagus was extremely fresh and delightfully crisp, and the eggs in the omelette fluffy and flavourful. My daughter enjoyed the smoked whitefish hash which was busting with flavour from the fresh fish, potatoes, and seasonings like mustard seed and black pepper.
My omelette and my daughter's hash were served with boiled, skin-on potatoes on a bed of greens and dressed with a light horseradish dressing that had just the right amount of kick to it without being over-powering.
Our server (we didn't get his name) was amazing as well. He was friendly, gracious, and attentive (always refilling our water glasses and coffee). And he had such a big smile that you couldn't help but smile back!
