“A Summer Night's Coriander Variations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

On a July night we went to Victor's. Having told the restaurant a few days before, we chose the Iron Chef Menu.

Our mystery ingredient was coriander.

We enjoyed every dish, although the coriander component was uneven. The 5-course menu consisted of: a refreshing and tasty gaspacho of coriander, grapes and pine nuts; scallops with cilantro chutney; thai chicken with coriander purée; asado-style (Argentinian) rib-eye with coriander chimni; and a strawberry shortcake with coriander-macerated strawberries.

In the end, the gaspacho came on top, thanks to its simplicity and truthfulness to coriander. At the end of the meal, we were pleased to congratulate "our" winning chef, who happened to be a student at one of the local culinary schools.

Thanks to the excitement of a meal where you can't really know what to expect, this was a most enjoyableand exciting evening. The service was charming throughout.

The Iron Chef Menu is $85. For wine pairing, add (like we did) $40. You won't regret it.

“Inventive menu with ginger in every course”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

20 of us went for dinner in their private room and voted on Ginger as the secret ingredient. Five courses were served. All were incredibly creative, redefining our expectations of the food genre. So for example, carrot and ginger soup was not liquid.

A progression that included ginger root, portobello sous vide and beef sous vide with chocolate sauce was riveting.

Wine pairings were highly appropriate and generous.

The cost with pairings was around $185/person, slightly less than at Shoto for a meal that was equally inventive, but fewer courses and less overall polish. Still, at Victor you can sit in a private dining room with your 20 friends and have a nice conversation, while at Shoto you're around a bar and they'll never reserve for 20.

This is a top-notch Toronto experience. Go.

“Great food from one of Canada's Top Chefs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

Had an awesome meal there recently......prepared by David Chrystian. Not your usual steak house or hotel restaurant. Fine dining at its best. Arctic Char was served on bed of kale with tomatoes & olives....so tasty. Particularly enjoyed the beef tenderloin & cabbage roll plate. Seems an odd combination, but with the beet horseradish, it was delicious. David served his specialty of cabbage rolls when he competed on Top Chef & the judges loved them. Dessert was a sampling of several desserts shared by everyone at the table.....all were excellent. Atmosphere was very relaxed & our waiter was so professional, but relaxed & engaging.

“Good value and high quality dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

I was skeptical at first since the restaurant was in a hotel. Not my usual dining choice.
This is a boutique hotel and the restaurant and bar are small but very inviting. Staff was very cordial, informative and cheerful. The recommendations of wine and main course were excellent.
The presentation of the food is appealing and most of all main dish (fish) was excellent! Not an extensive menu but interesting and definetely fine French dining. Wine menu is extensive but tends to be on the high end...totally expected for this type of restaurant.

“Fine Dining on Mercer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

As the weather was unseasonably cold during a recent stay at Le Germain we decided to eat in, rather than venture into the frigid temperatures. We were really glad we did. After sharing some oysters and the lobster dumplings for appetizers (all super delicious), my partner enjoyed his steak entree while I had the delicious buttermilk fried chicken (perfect on a cold and windy night). A friend, who had joined us for the meal, ordered two items from the Toronto tasting menu which he found not substantial enough for a whole meal (he ordered the fish and chips, which had two very small pieces of fish, and the gratin) ... he wished he had ordered as we had done. But nevertheless, the quality of the food was very high, the service was friendly and prompt and the place had a great vibe to it that would be suitable for casual as well as more formal occasions. A real treat!
